Hello,

The National Film Board has produced a timely and insightful
documentary
about playright and social activist David Fennario. I thought other
readers of this mailing list might be interested in this sort of
programming, and to this end, I’ve included a brief synopsis of the film
below. You can also ge the same information at:

Fennario’s BANANA BOOTS, March 11 on Bravo!

Montreal playwright David Fennario, who achieved fame early, likes to
say that he has “worked his way down” ever since his first hit,
Balconville took Canada by storm. Now he concentrates his talents on
grass-roots political theatre. A film version of his recent work Banana
Boots premieres at 9:00 pm, Wednesday, March 11 on Bravo

In a monologue both personal and political, Fennario draws parallels
between Quebec and Northern Ireland as he blends memories of the working
class streets of his youth with an account of a journey to Belfast for
the Irish premiere of Balconville.

“Kathleen sounds just like my mother y’know,” he says of an Irish woman
he meets. “Her and all these other women in Verdun, doing what they
gotta do just to keep things maintained and screaming because they don't
wanna give up and go under and become what they're supposed to become –
second-class citizens, without any hope for themselves and their
children.”

Directed by Alec MacLeod and produced by Mark Zannis, Banana Boots is an
account of Fennario’s own artistic and political journey æ his
commitment to community theatre over major theatrical performances and
his struggle to "create theatre that can be used to fight back.”

David Fennario’s Banana Boots and Fennario: His World on Stage are both
available on video. Call 1-800-267-7710 to order.
