Nightswimming presents a play reading of
CITY OF WINE - a trilogy of plays by Ned Dickens
Friday, September 15, 2000 - Toronto, Ontario
CITY OF WINE presents the story of the city of Thebes through
a trilogy of plays:
JOCASTA tells the tragic story of Oedipus' mother and brings us
face to face with the source of the curse which destroys her
mythic family. A love story, this play traces Jocasta's life from the
birth of her son Oedipus, through his supposed death at the
hands of her accursed husband Laius, to Oedipus' return and
eventual marriage to his mother.
OEDIPUS reveals the full horror of their relationship, as the city
plunges into plague and devastation. An earlier version of this
play was produced by Die in Debt Theatre under the Gardiner
Expressway and received the 1995 Dora Mavor Moore Award
for Outstanding Production.
In CREON the citizens of Thebes look back on the brief and
tragic reign of Jocasta's brother Creon and his confrontation
with Oedipus' daughter Antigone. This play is set entirely
within a tavern in Thebes, featuring only the chorus from the
previous two plays, as they try to make sense of the terrible
events that have befallen their city.
With a cast of 19 actors, CITY OF WINE is an essential intersection
with one of our classic stories. Ned Dickens' new version of this
vital myth uses dynamic verse and a large chorus with its own
take on the actions of its leadership.
Don't miss this marathon reading of an important and mesmerizing
epic on the life and times of a great city.
