Hello all:

Here's a new book that will likely be of interest and one I can recommend
highly.

        A FLY ON THE CURTAIN

        by

        Fred Euringer

        Oberon Press, 2000

This book is a memoir of Actor-Director-Playwright-Teacher Fred
Euringer's early experiences in Canadian theatre in the 1950s and 1960s.

Typical of theatre artists of his generation, Fred Euringer had
his earliest experiences at Hart House Theatre, the Straw Hat Players in
Port Carling, the University Women's Alumnae Theatre, the Stratford
Festival, the Canadian Players, the Crest Theatre, CBC radio and
television, and a host of other amateur and university theatres.

The book covers the window from 1955 until 1963 when he joined the
faculty of Queen's University as head of the Department of Drama, a
position he held for eighteen years between 1963 and 1985.

At times uproariously funny, at times sensitive and thought
provoking, the book presents a unique viewpoint on this little-documented
period of Canadian theatre.

The Stratford years deal with the work of Tyrone Guthrie and
Michael Langham, with Christopher Plummer, Paul Scofield, William Hutt,
Bruno Gerussi, Julie Harris, and many others. Donald Sutherland features
strongly in the early university and Straw Hat episodes.

John Karastamatis in the "Globe and Mail" (18 Nov, p
D15) describes it as "delightful" and refers to Fred's "elegant yet casual
prose style" and to his "sharp eye for detail." To those who know Fred,
none of this praise will be surprising. He's a man who has made a huge
impact on countless people and has a remarkably incisive and creative
intelligence.

The book, published by Oberon Press, is available at bookstores
across Canada. It's a perfect gift and sells for only $19.95.
