ACSUS-in-Canada Colloquium
Sept. 15-16, 2000

CALL FOR PROPOSALS
The Association for Canadian Studies in the United States (ACSUS) will hold
its 3rd interdisciplinary ACSUS-in-Canada Colloquium September 15-16, 2000,
at the Palliser Hotel in Calgary, Alberta.
The theme of the colloquium is "Western Mindscapes."
Proposals from all disciplines are invited that address issues and
questions related to:
-- Defining the West
-- Comparing the American and Canadian West(s)
-- The West(s) of different groups (eg. racial, ethnic, gender, class,
political, etc)
-- Portrayals of the West(s) (eg. literature, popular culture, media,
cinema, etc.)
-- The West(s) within the West (eg, British Columbia, the Prairies,
the North)
-- The West(s) as transnational political, economic, cultural space
-- The future of the West(s)--within Canada/North America/globally
-- Western issues -- Center v. Periphery, Pacific Rim locus and
interests vs. Atlantic
-- The Reform agenda (a Western phenomenon?)
-- Resources, Environment, First Nations as Western issues
This multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary Colloquium will provide an
intimate forum for Americans and Canadians to compare research and
perspectives on an area of vital importance to both countries and enhance
links among American Canadianists and their colleagues in Canada.
