Saskatchewan Playwrights Centre Seeks Part-time Dramaturg

--- Note: Please replay to sk.playwrights at sk.sympatico.ca ---

The Saskatchewan Playwrights Centre, a play development centre
founded in 1981 that is an armslength committee of the Saskatchewan
Writers Guild, seeks an experienced, half-time dramaturge. The SPC has a
fine reputation and track record for helping our members develop their
scripts, many of which have received several stage productions, as well
as being performed on radio. Plays developed under the auspices of SPC
have also received publication and awards. Our members are mostly
playwrights, but we also have associate members who are either
dramaturges, theatre professors, actors or directors interested in
Saskatchewan plays.
Angus Ferguson, our talented and well-liked dramaturge for the last
four years, is leaving to pursue full-time his career as Artistic
Director of Dancing Sky Theatre, the growing company he and Louisa
Ferguson founded together.
We hope you are the right person to be our new dramaturge at this
dynamic time in our short history. Besides excellent one on one
dramaturgical skills, the successful applicant must be able to conduct
workshops for our playwrights, work to deadlines, cooperate and
communicate well with the SPC's part-time administrator, the SPC board,
actors and playwrights. A profound belief in the importance of writing
stage plays is a must. Knowledge of the Canadian theatre scene would be
an asset, as would formal training and/or apprenticeship in dramaturgy.
Our dramaturge must either have experience networking with PACT and LMDA
members, or be very keen to begin doing so now. As grants are a
necessity of life for the SPC, proven grantsmanship ability is also an
important asset.
The SPC is currently attempting to increase the desireability of
the dramaturge position. At present, the dramaturge works 20 hrs./wk.
on a 12 month contract, while the administrator works approximately 1/4
time @ 14 hrs./wk. on an 11 month contract. Present hourly rate is the
same, $15.00, for both positions, as both people perform work of equal
value to the SPC.
The part-time administrator of the SPC is a part-time University
lecturer in theatre, a very hardworking, organized, pleasant and
cooperative person to work alongside. The SPC board is a united,
dedicated and fun group which attempts to be a progessive employer on a
shoestring.
Although the SPC office is in Saskatoon, the board's search
committee does not require that the successful applicant live in the
Saskatoon area. The organization is in the process of re-inventing itself,
so as to increase our
effectiveness to the membership, who need to get their plays seen across
the country. We are looking for the best person to help us do that. The
board is holding a retreat on the second weekend in September, at which we will
"look at the SPC sideways"; one goal of the retreat is to find a new staff
structure that works
for everyone. At present, our job descriptions are out-of-date. The new
dramaturge, as well as
the administrator, would take part in the board retreat.
Here are the many ways you can send a letter of application,
including your full name, address and phone number, but please bear in
mind that we need your CV of dramaturgical and other relevant experience
in hard copy through the mail, postmarked no later than July 31.
Please be advised, however, that the deadline may be extended if the SPC
board search committee deems it necessary.

Our mailing address is: SPC, Box 3092, Saskatoon, Sk. S7K 3S9.
Phone # there: 306-665-7707
You may also send your letter by fax to 306-244-0255 or by e-mail to
sk.playwrights at sk.sympatico.ca
You may send queries, but not applications, please, to one of our board
members at mblackst at acadia.net

The SPC board thanks you for your interest in this position. This
site will be updated as soon as possible to apprize you of the outcome
of our search. In conformity with Canadian immigration requirements,
this advertisement is directed in the first instance to Canadian citizens or
landed immigrants.
