This came through on the PUC-list. I'm not sure know what I expected, but
the paucity, the dullness, the transparency of the reply surprised me all
the same. Perhaps it will surprise you too.

>>> I wrote this to our new MP next door. His response follows:
>>>
>>> Hello Mr. Day,
>>>
>>> Congratulations on your successful leadership campaign. As a
>>> resident of
>>> the riding next door, I welcome you and your family to the Okanagan
>>> and hope
>>> to see you and Mrs. Day attending some of the many cultural events
>>> that
>>> Kelowna has to offer.
>>>
>>> As you might have heard, Kelowna has embarked on a very exciting
>>> initiative
>>> to develop the north end of downtown into a vibrant cultural district
>>> that
>>> will serve as the centrepiece of our cultural tourism program. This
>>> program
>>> recognizes that the traditional tourist who has frequented our valley
>>> is
>>> changing and that cultural activities (festivals, performing arts,
>>> heritage
>>> sites, first nations exhibits) are the most popular tourist
>>> activities
>>> currently, and with an ageing demographic, forecast to grow even more
>>> in the
>>> coming years.
>>>
>>> To meet this demand we are developing our arts and culture
>>> infrastructure,
>>> assisting new arts events to be created and building a facility
>>> downtown to
>>> act as the hub for this activity. We are also actively building
>>> partnerships with the tourism industry, the business community and
>>> the
>>> sports, recreation and parks sector.
>>>
>>> In pursuit of these objectives I wanted to enquire as to what the
>>> Alliance
>>> Party's policy(s) are in relation to arts and culture and what you
>>> saw as
>>> the federal government's role in promoting and supporting Canadian
>>> culture.
>>> I could find nothing on the website and so thought I would go
>>> straight to
>>> the top. I would very much appreciate an opportunity to discuss
>>> cultural
>>> issues with you and look forward to your response.
>>>
>>> Thank you very much.

>>> Dear Mr. Forsyth:
>>>
>>> Thank you for your e-mail message.
>>>
>>> I agree that the arts are vital to our culture and to the spirit of
>>> being a
>>> Canadian. The question is what role the government should play in
>>> promoting
>>> culture and the arts, and whether such efforts should be publicly or
>>> privately funded. The Canadian Alliance will continue to examine the

>>> In the meantime, you may wish to share your ideas with the Canadian
>>> Alliance
>>> Critic for Canadian Heritage, Deborah Grey. You may write to Miss.
>>> Grey in
>>> care of the House of Commons, Ottawa, Ontario K1A 0A6.
>>>
>>> Thank you for your interest and for taking the time to write. I
>>> encourage
>>> you to become involved with the Alliance at the grassroots level in
>>> your
>>> local constituency to advance your ideas through our bottom-up policy
>>> development process.
>>>
>>> Respectfully yours,
>>>
