Hello All:

Here is a message I just received from Louise Robert at HSSFC. It is
self-explanatory. But because theatre is always a difficult topic for
archives -- all that 3-dimensional theatre material -- I urge anyone who
has an interest at all in the records of our theatres to respond to this
consultation.

It seems to me that both ACTR/ARTC and SQET should have strong
representation in this consultation lest theatre get left out.

further information on the ways to provide views and/or register for the
meeting. Please send the message to your members.

Announcement from the National Archives of Canada and the Social Sciences
and Humanities Research Council of Canada

General Stakeholders Meeting on Research Data Archiving, Management and
Access

Unlike many countries, Canada has no national facility mandated to preserve
and manage digital research materials. Consequently, digital research
materials of all kinds are difficult to access and in danger of being lost.
As well, Canada has no national voice in the creation of international
standards and access systems.

In order to address this situation, the Social Sciences and Humanities
Research Council (SSHRC) and the National Archives are conducting a national
consultation on social sciences and humanities research data archiving and
management. The purpose is to assess the needs of the Canadian research and
archival communities and to make recommendations to the federal government
on the design of a new national data archiving facility.

To kick off the national consultation, SSHRC and the National Archives are
hosting a general stakeholders meeting. All individuals and representatives
of organizations with an interest in social sciences and humanities research
and with an interest in improving the state of data archiving in Canada are
invited to attend and make their views known.

Contrairement à plusieurs pays, le Canada ne possède pas de centre national
consacré à la préservation et à la gestion à long terme des données de
recherche numérisées. Par conséquent, des données de recherche numérisées de
toutes sortes sont difficiles à consulter et risquent d'être détruites. En
outre, le Canada ne participe pas à la création de normes et de systèmes
d'accès à l'échelle internationale.

Afin de corriger cette situation, le Conseil de recherches en sciences
humaines (CRSH) et les Archives nationales du Canada effectuent une
consultation nationale sur la gestion et la préservation des archives de
données de recherche en sciences humaines. L'objectif de cette consultation
est d'évaluer les besoins des communautés de chercheurs et d'archivistes
canadiens et de formuler des recommandations à l'intention du gouvernement
fédéral au sujet de la conception d'un nouveau centre national d'archives de
données.

Dans le but de lancer cette consultation nationale, le CRSH et les Archives
nationales du Canada organisent une réunion générale des intervenants. Les
