Hello All

You may wonder where I get the information for the updates that I make in
the encyclopedia. Some come from agents for the artists profiled on the
site. Some come from the artists themselves. I read a mountain of papers and
magazines each week (and not just Canadian ones - a recent update to the
late Barbara Hamilton's bio, for instance, came from a fascinating article
in Vanity Fair about her lover, a convicted murderer). And I surf the net,
of course. But many, many of the updates come from reading all of the dozens
of reviews that are sent to me from the critics who archive at
canadiantheatre.com. These reviews also act as a bit of a weather vane -
telling me which way the theatrical winds are blowing (ie: which
playwright's single first play is in fashion and which same playwright
vanishes from the radar altogether after that play gets its ten productions
across the land) - I try as much as possible to keep the project from being
propelled by fashion. Again, that's why fewer profiles go up now than before
- time tells the story.

Meanwhile, visits to the site are still excellent; last year at this time we
had the typical summer slow-down (at 11,000 some per week); this year we're
doing 13,000 per week. There are huge fluctuations in these numbers over the
year with end-of-term (when kids are throwing assignments together) the
busiest on the site. Odd thing, though, we broke a record in the middle of
August with over 4,000 visits on a single day. I'm still trying to figure
that one out.
