Rasik Arts is gathering forces for its first season and would like to invite
anyone interested in becoming a part of Rasik (or just eager to read a play)
to come to Equity Showcase on June 4 at 7pm.
Rasik Arts is a non-profit organization devoted to the theatre of South
Asia, especially to the emerging contemporary theatre of India. We aim to
entertain and educate the mainstream about South Asian theatre, and give
exposure to the great pool of talent in Toronto (or elsewhere) of South
Asian descent. Participation in Rasik is not limited to ethnic origin,
however, and all who want to become a part our activities are welcome.
Upcoming Activities: An ACTING WORKSHOP with MAHESH DATTANI, Indias leading
English-language playwright, actor and director, will take place AUGUST
9-13, 2001 in downtown Toronto. (More details at meeting). The official
launch of Rasik will be in September with the production of UMRAO by
Geetanjali Shree, in English translation. Two staged readings of plays (not
cast yet) are planned for November and January. There are at least two other
scripts waiting in line for fully-mounted productions in 2002 and 2003. A
distinctive facet of Rasik will be scheduled "Roundtables", gatherings to
read a play together, discuss and become acquainted with the theatre scene
in South Asia. Six such Roundtables are planned between September 2001 and
April 2002. A web site is under construction, an exciting feature of which
will be a "Talent Registry" with photos, resumes and contact information for
South Asian performers available on-line. Come June 4 to learn more, or to
help develop it.! ! In fact, the doors are open for more founding members,
other positions, and those who want to help Rasik realize its full
potential.
You can contact Sally Jones (Founder and Artistic Director) regarding any of
the above by email, rasikarts at yahoo.com, or by phone, 416-654-9231.
