MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
Your weekly newsletter "Contact ICCS-CIEC" is back after a one-month break. The constant increase in subscribers to this newsletter is a strong confirmation that "Contact ICCS-CIEC" answers a real need expressed by Canadianists.

I would like to take the opportunity in this issue to draw your attention to an important event: the arrival of Catherine Bastedo-Boileau to the Secretariat of the International Council for Canadian Studies. Since September 4, 2001, Ms. Bastedo-Boileau is the new Executive Director of the ICCS. On behalf of the members of the ICCS, I would like to extend our warmest welcome.

By the same token, allow me to highlight the tremendous role Gaëtan Vallières played by accepting to assume for close to a year the responsibilities of Acting Executive Director. Far from just holding the position until an Executive Director was hired, Gaëtan, in collaboration with the Executive Committee, proceeded to undertake important transformations within the ICCS. This electronic newsletter is but one example of the many initiatives implemented under his directorship. The Executive Committee expressed its gratitude to Gaëtan Vallières by awarding him an ICCS Certificate of Merit in Canadian Studies in an official ceremony during the Executive Council meetings held in Vancouver in May 2001. I would like to reiterate here my admiration for the exceptional work Gaëtan has accomplished with the help of his team at the ICCS Secretariat.

INTERNATIONAL SUMMER SEMINAR
The 5th annual International Summer Seminar was held in Ottawa from August 19-24. Twenty-seven academics and graduate students from seventeen countries brought to discussions both thoughtful questions and spirited opinions. Each day was devoted to one or two specific themes such as Aboriginal Peoples, Citizenship, Canadian Literature, Perspectives on Canadian Culture, Globalization and the Canadian Economy, and Canadian Foreign Policy. One of the perennial highlights of the week is, however, the day spent at Willson House at Meech Lake, site of the Meech Lake constitutional negotiations. Participants and speakers alike appreciate the beauty of the surrounding Gatineau Park and the elegantly refurbished meeting space at Willson House. But the day, which is devoted to lectures on Canadian Federalism and the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, is imbued with special importance because of the historical significance of the venue. DISSOLVING BOUNDARIES?CANADA IN A GLOBALIZING WORLD
Between May 25 and June 1, 2002, the University of Toronto will host the Congress of the Social Sciences and the Humanities, the largest multi-disciplinary academic gathering in North America.The theme of the Congress is "Boundaries."As part of this larger gathering, the Canadian Studies Programme at University College invites scholars from around the world to explore one aspect of this theme. Issues on which participants may wish to focus include: environment, culture, Aboriginal rights, justice, migration, trade, and the nation-state. Participants may emphasize international pressures for change and the manner in which the Canadian paradigm can make a distinctive contribution to resolving some of these issues.Our goal is to create a forum that permits an interdisciplinary approach to the discussion of these complex issues. CONAHEC 
Since NAFTA was signed in 1994, cross-border economic activity and professional mobility have increased significantly in North America, creating challenges and opportunities that require a concerted response from the higher education institutions in Canada, Mexico, and the United States.Well-trained professionals are needed to work in the emerging trilateral setting. A strategic partnership among higher education institutions, national associations, foundations, government agencies, and corporations was deemed crucial to improving academic cooperation in the North American region, thus the Consortium for North American Higher Education Collaboration (http://conahec.org) was created to build a North American academic community. CONAHEC also developed and maintains North American Education Leadership Network or EL NET (http://elnet.org) an online networking tool for higher education collaboration in North America.

ABECAN VI CONFERENCE
Just a quick reminder that the Brazilian Association for Canadian Studies will hold its 6th annual, international conference in Porto Alere  RS  Brazil, November 11-14, 2001. Altogether, over 150 papers will be presented and 30 Canadian and international scholars will be present.

SEEING CANADIAN VOICES: WRITERS IN LIGHT AND SHADOW
Canadianists present in Ottawa between September 6 to October 11, 2001 are invited to see a photography exhibit entitled "Seeing Canadian Voices: Writers in Light and Shadow" by Danielle Schaub (an Israeli Canadianist) at the National Library of Canada in Ottawa.

QUOI DE NEUF AU CIEC?

MESSAGE DU PRÉSIDENT
Après un mois de repos, votre lettre d'information hebdomadaire « Contact ICCS-CIEC » est de retour. L'augmentation régulière du nombre d'abonnés le prouve : ce bulletin répond à une réelle demande des canadianistes. 

Ce numéro de rentrée me permet d'attirer à nouveau votre attention sur un point important : le Conseil international a, depuis le 4 septembre 2001, une nouvelle Directrice générale, Madame Catherine Bastedo-Boileau. Au nom de l'ensemble des membres du CIEC, je suis heureux de lui souhaiter la bienvenue.

C'est aussi le moment de rappeler, le rôle fondamental joué par Monsieur Gaëtan Vallières qui a accepté, pendant près d'un an, d'assurer la lourde tâche de Directeur général faisant fonction. Loin d'être un simple Directeur de transition, Gaëtan a, en collaboration avec le comité exécutif, procédé à des transformations majeures de l'organisation interne du CIEC. Ce bulletin électronique n'est qu'un des multiples exemples des nouveautés mises en place sous sa direction. Le Comité exécutif a exprimé très officiellement ses remerciements à Gaëtan Vallières en lui décernant en mai 2001, un Certificat de mérite en études canadiennes. Je tiens une fois encore à dire ici toute mon admiration pour le travail exceptionnel qu'il a réalisé en collaboration avec toute son équipe du secrétariat.

SÉMINAIRE INTERNATIONAL D'ÉTÉ EN ÉTUDES CANADIENNES
Le 5e Séminaire international d'été en études canadiennes a eu lieu à Ottawa du 19 au 24 août, 2001. Les 27 participants provenant de 17 pays ont su remplir d'opinions et de commentaires pertinents les présentations faites par divers conférenciers. Chaque journée du séminaire portait sur un ou deux thèmes particuliers (dont les peuples autochtones, la citoyenneté, la littérature, la culture, la mondialisation, l'économie, la politique étrangère). Une des activités bien appréciée des participants est la journée passée à la Maison Willson du lac Meech, là où a eu lieu les négociations constitutionnelles. Tant les participants que les conférenciers ont apprécié ce site enchanteur (les superbes collines de la Gatineau et l'élégante Maison Willson), et, bien entendu, les présentations sur le fédéralisme canadien et la Charte canadienne des droits et libertés y prenaient un aspect tout à fait significatif.

Le Congrès des sciences sociales et humaines aura lieu du 25 mai au 1er juin 2002 à l'Université de Toronto. Le thème du congrès portera sur les frontières. PUBLICATION SUR L'OUVRE DE MICHAEL ONDAATJE
La maison d'édition Guernica a l'intention de publier en anglais, dans sa collection sur les auteurs canadiens, un livre sur l'ouvre du Michael Ondaatje. Elle invite donc les chercheurs à lui faire parvenir des textes (6000 mots maximum) sur l'ouvre de cet auteur. Les textes doivent suivre le style de la MLA, avec bibliographie, mais sans notes en bas de page. Contact: Steven Totosy au totosy at lib.purdue.edu.

CONSORTIUM POUR LA COLLABORATION DANS L'ENSEIGNEMENT SUPÉRIEUR EN AMÉRIQUE DU NORD (CONAHEC)

Les défis et occasions engendrés par cette nouvelle réalité exigent une réponse concertée des établissements d'enseignement supérieur au Canada, au Mexique et aux États-Unis.Le besoin de professionnels hautement qualifiés dans ce nouveau cadre trinational est une réalité. Par conséquent, il est essentiel que les établissements d'enseignement supérieur, les associations nationales, les fondations, les organismes gouvernementaux et les entreprises forment un partenariat stratégique en vue d'améliorer la coopération universitaire en Amérique du Nord. LE 6e CONGRÈS INTERNATIONAL DE L'ABECAN
L'ABECAN aimerait rappeler que son 6e congrès international aura lieu à Porto Alere  RS  Brésil du 11 au 14 novembre 2001. L'ABECAN a déjà reçu plus de 150 communications, dont une trentaine provenant de chercheurs du Canada et de l'étranger.

VOIR LES VOIX CANADIENNES : ÉCRIVAINES ET ÉCRIVAINS EN OMBRE ET LUMIÈRE
Les canadianistes qui se rendront à Ottawa en septembre et début octobre auront la chance de voir une exposition de photos intitulée « Voir les voix canadiennes : Écrivaines et écrivains en ombre et lumière » de Danielle Schaub (une canadianiste israélienne). Cette exposition a lieu à la Bibliothèque nationale du Canada, à Ottawa du 6 septembre au 11 octobre 2001.

NOUVELLE PARUTION
Jaap Lintvelt, Aspects de la narration : thématique, idéologie et identité. Québec, Éditions Nota Bene, Paris, L'Harmattan. 
Après une analyse narratologique des récits de Guy de Maupassant et de Moira de Julien Green, Jaap Lintvelt aborde la littérature québécoise. Dans une analyse de l'ouvre d'Anne Hébert, il démontre comment la romancière, grâce à une technique narrative experte, développe une problématique identitaire originale. L'analyse de l'ouvre romanesque de Jacques Poulin montre que le dualisme sexué (masculinité/féminité) se combine avec une double identité culturelle (américanité/francité) qui finit, dans les plus récents romans, par aboutir à la fusion (androgynie/québécité). Jaap Lintvelt est professeur de littérature française et québécoise a l'Université de Groningen (Pays-Bas) et directeur du Centre d'études canadiennes.
