Meaning of 'mensch'

Is there anyone who could explain to me the meaning of "mensch" in this context: "[...] but he was always solid with me throughout our long relationship and I think of him fondly. So, do hundreds of other people because he was, as they say in yiddish (sic), a mensch."?
