JOIN EQUITY SHOWCASE THEATRE & RASIK ARTS AS WE PRESENT AND EVENING WITH
VETERAN INDIAN THEATRE DIRECTOR HABIB TANVIR
Tanvirs work is not only village fables but bits of Brecht and The
Bourgeois Gentihomme with no apparent differences. From folk tales to
Molière, its all one seamless movement.
The
London Times
Equity Showcase Theatre and Rasik Arts proudly present an evening with
internationally renowned Indian theatre director Habib Tanvir. Habib Tanvir
will speak at Equity Showcase Theatre, 651 Dufferin St. (corner of Dufferin
and Dundas) on Monday, July 8th, 2002 at 7:30 pm. Admission is
pay-what-you-can.
For one night only attendees will have the opportunity to hear and meet
Habib Tanvir, noted journalist, actor, and director. Tanvir will be
speaking on Traditions and Modern Indian Theatre, as well as discussing
his own legendary work and extraordinary process.
The 79-year-old Tanvir was educated in India and went on to study at
Londons RADA, the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School and the London British
Drama League. Returning to India in 1954 he founded Delhis first
professional theatre company, Hindustani Theatre. In 1959 he founded Naya
Theatre in Bhopal, working with tribal and village people. For his
innovative work he has received numerous awards, beginning with the Sangeet
Natak Akademi Award for Drama in 1969 and this year receiving the title of
Padmabushan, one of Indias highest civilian awards, from the Government of
India.
Tanvirs Naya Theatre, whose actors are aboriginal folk artists from the
Chattisgarb region of central India, combine western classics such as
Shakespeare with traditional Indian legends in a breath-taking pop art
blend. One of their most successful productions, Charandas Chor, produced
in 1974, won the prestigious Fringe Firsts Award at the Edinburgh
International Drama Festival in 1982. Apart from giving performances all
over India, Naya Theatre also engages in frequent foreign tours in the
former Soviet Union, the UK, and Europe. Tanvir has also appeared in the
film Gandhi and the Canadian films The Burning Season and Midnight
Embers.
Come hear and meet Habib Tanvir on Monday, July 8, 2002 at 7:30 pm
