The Theatre Centre and the
Literary Managers and Dramaturgs of the Americas (LMDA)
Mini-Conference on
DRAMATURGY July 8 and 9, 2002 ... Toronto
Bringing together playwrights and dramaturgs with other members of the
Canadian theatre community, this annual conference features two full days
devoted to the art of dramaturgy.
Guest speakers will discuss specific projects by addressing in detail the
process they used to develop the play. We also welcome artists from across
Canada and beyond, feature reports on activities in other major theatre
centres.

Monday July 8

the Citadel Theatre; Celia McBride on her new

premiering this summer at the Stratford
Festival
Tuesday July 9
10am Ross Manson on the creation of his
multi-disciplinary hit Mortality
11:00am Michael Miller discusses Factory Theatre's
CrossCurrents Festival of
Cultural Ideas
12:00pm Habib Tanvir on translating and producing Rahul
Varma's Bhopal; and on
the creation of his own play Bahadur Kalarin
1:15pm - 2:30pm Lunch
2:30pm Wayne Strongman outlines Tapestry's innovative
Composer-Librettist
Laboratory
3:45pm - 5:00pm Rachel Ditor on dramaturgy and the Vancouver theatre
community; Rachel
will also report on June's LMDA conference on
play development.

Admission is free.
All spaces for the conference have been filled, but a waiting list has been
started.

We are honoured that Habib Tanvir will be speaking at this year's
conference.
Habib Tanvir is a noted journalist, actor, and director in India. In 1954 he
founded Delhi's first professional theatre company, Hindustani Theatre. In
1959 he founded Naya Theatre in Bhopal, working with tribal and village
people. For his innovative work he has received numerous awards, and this
year received the title of Padmabushan, one of India's highest civilian
awards, from the Government of India.
