School of the Arts

The School of the Arts at McMaster University invites applications for 
a tenure track appointment in Studio Art at the rank of Assistant 
Professor, commencing July 1, 2004.  Minimum annual salary at the 
Assistant Professor rank will be $49,861 as of July 1, 2004.  The 
studio programme is one programme area in the School for the Arts which 
also houses Art, Art History, Multimedia, Music, and Theatre and Film 
programmes.

The School is seeking a candidate with an M.F.A. or the equivalent who 
has the personality to work collectively in team teaching situations 
and is willing to contribute to initiatives that support self-directed 
studio study.  The candidate should be able to connect historical 
awareness with contemporary practice and be committed to empowering the 
creative spirit and potential of art students who work across a broad 
spectrum of conceptual concerns and processes.  Familiarity and 
willingness to utilize the McMaster Museum of Art in teaching practice 
will be considered an asset.  The candidate should have expertise in a 
range of two-dimensional fields with a strong knowledge base of 
practical skills and a conceptual framework for teaching in two or more 
of the areas of drawing, printmaking and painting.  Demonstrated record 
exhibiting and successful teaching record are required.

Electronic Texts and Text Analysis

The Faculty of Humanities at McMaster University invites applications 
for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in 
Electronic Texts and Text Analysis, commencing July 1, 2004.  Minimum 
annual salary at the Assistant Professor rank will be $49,861 as of 
July 1, 2004.  The successful candidate will be appointed to the 
Multimedia Program in the School of the Arts and, if suitable, to one 
of the following Departments: English, French, or Modern Languages and 
Linguistics. The successful candidate should demonstrate the ability to 
teach courses about electronic texts and text programming. Candidates 
should demonstrate research strength in the area of electronic 
textuality and computer-assisted  text analysis. Expertise in 
computational linguistics or electronic scholarly editions will be an 
asset. Candidates should have a Ph.D. in a relevant discipline in the 
humanities and have experience with research computing projects in the 
humanities.

McMaster has a successful program in Multimedia, a new program in 
Communication Studies and is developing a graduate program in the area 
of Multimedia, Technology and Culture. McMaster is also the lead 
institution on a CFI funded Text Analysis Portal for Research project 
and is the host of the peer reviewed journal Text Technology.  For

Music History

The School of the Arts at McMaster University invites applications for 
a twelve month (July 1, 2004-June 30, 2005) contractually limited 
appointment in Music, at the rank of Assistant Professor. Salary for 
the twelve month period at this rank will be $49,861 as of July 1, 2004.

The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. in Musicology, complete or 
near completion, with demonstrated scholarly and pedagogical strengths 
in Western music.  Preference will be given to candidates with a proven 
record of successful teaching at the university level.  The successful  
candidate will teach six half-year courses: music appreciation, aural 
skills, upper-level courses    and possibly Canadian Music.  Active 
participation in the administrative activities of the Music program, 
including auditions, juries, recruiting, and committee assignments, is 
an integral part of this position.

Theatre and Film Studies

The School of the Arts at McMaster University invites applications for 
a twelve-month, Contractually Limited Appointment in Theatre and Film 
Studies at the rank of Assistant Professor, commencing July 1, 2004. 
Minimum salary at that time will be $49,861. The successful candidate 
will have a Ph.D. with specialization in Theatre Studies, or its 
equivalent, and significant experience in analyzing a range of dramatic 
performances in different media.

Teaching duties will include undergraduate courses that introduce 
students to performance analysis in a range of cultures, forms and 
media (i.e. live stage performance, film, digital video, television, 
opera, musicals, performance art) and will teach senior courses on 
theory and history (1700 to the present) of performance practices with 
an emphasis on theatre.  There may also be an opportunity for this  
candidate to direct or act as dramaturge on the fall departmental 
production. Candidates with a demonstrable record of successful 
teaching at the post-secondary level and a documented program of 
ongoing research in performance analysis and theories of dramatic 
performance will receive priority. Candidates should be willing and 
able to engage in interdisciplinary teaching and scholarship within the 
School and in outreach activities with other departments in the 
University. In addition to teaching and research, the successful 
candidate will be expected to take an active part in the administration 
of the Theatre & Film Studies Program, and to serve on various 
committees at the School level.

Performer at the rank of Assistant Professor, commencing July 1, 2004. 
Minimum salary at that time will be $49,861. The successful candidate 
will have a M.F.A., or Ph.D. with specialization in Acting or 
Directing, or its equivalent, and significant experience in Directing 
and in the theoretical analysis of performance practices. Equivalent 
professional training and experience will be considered.

Teaching duties will include undergraduate courses in acting, directing 
and performance practices, with special emphasis on questions of social 
inclusivity in contemporary performance.  The program also offers the 
opportunity to direct the departmental fall production. Candidates with 
a demonstrable record of successful teaching at the post-secondary 
level, a documented program of on-going artistic and/or academic 
research, and experience in organizing theatre events will receive 
priority. Candidates should be willing and able to engage in 
interdisciplinary teaching and scholarship within the School and in 
outreach activities with other departments in the University. In 
addition to teaching and research, the successful candidate will be 
expected to take an active part in the administration of the Theatre & 
Film Studies Program, and to serve on various committees at the School 
level.
