The Stage Represented. Images and Iconography of the Theatre
21-24 October, 2004
Graduate Centre for Study of Drama
University of Toronto
The aim of this international, interdisciplinary conference is to
encourage cross-disciplinary discussion of materials and theoretical
issues related to theatre iconography, an important emerging
sub-discipline of theatre studies. The conference will examine a broad
range of visual records related to theatrical performance and
paratheatrical spectacle, including paintings, drawings, prints,
photographs and film. Proposals are welcomed for papers addressing such
topics as pictorial representations of theatrical subjects, their
conventions, history, and problematics, across all periods and
traditions of theatre, from the earliest times to the present. It is
expected that presentations will include visual material.
Proposals should include a title and a clear description of the complete
paper, of no more than 500 words. (Completed papers should be 3000 words
= 20 minutes as delivered). Please include a brief introduction, giving
the author's current university affiliation and status. Proposals from
graduate students are particularly encouraged.
Proposals, by mail or email, should be sent to
