Hello,
I would like to introduce you to a new community development project in
Vancouver, B.C. one that will also coming to Vancouver Island in the next
several months.
Some of you may be familiar with the process of Playback theatre
(www.playbacknet.org) and how it supports community members to share
cultural stories, stories of healing and bridge building.
This November 27th and 28th, 2004 we will be hosting an introductory
Playback Theatre workshop with the intention of building a new core company
based on diverse racial and cultural backgrounds. It is hoped that these
initial leaders will then bring this work into their own community and
develop their own Playback theatre troupe to support the challenges their
own community face. This core group of educators, activists, artists and
cultural leaders would then act as a resource and advocate for the many
other cultural community groups in development. In this way we hope to build
up a network of troupes each standing strong in their cultural pride and
support diverse communities to come together through the inspiration of
story.
If you or someone you know would be interested in participating in this
exciting project please consider attending the introductory workshop and
think tank session.
Sincerely,
Robert Osborne
Playback Theatre Director

Playback Theatre
Playback is a form of theatre unlike any other. It changes lives and
enriches communities. It is fun, daring and creates profound transformation
inparticipants and audiences alike.
Participants tell real life stories with the support of a conductor or
emcee. The storyteller chooses other participants to play the "characters"
in his/her story. The conductor then says "Watch!". Music begins and the
Playback is underway.
Through spontaneous scene-work incorporating movement and music, the
essential elements of each story are brought back to life.
