Pangaea Arts Presents:
A New Canadian Noh Play in Development
Acclaimed Canadian poet Daphne Marlatt has written an original Canadian Noh play, The Gull, that speaks of the experience of Japanese-Canadians returning to Steveston after the internment years. The story features two brothers who return to Steveston to fish in 1950. Traveling up the coast for the first time, a ghostly creature, part woman and part bird visits their boat. She pleads for the brothers to leave the hostile West Coast and return to their parent’s birthplace in Wakayama-ken, Japan.
Join Pangaea Arts for two performances of The Gull as a work in progress, at The National Nikkei Heritage Centre, and The Gulf of Georgia Cannery National Historic Site.
Classical Japanese Noh is one of the oldest continually performed theatre forms in the world. Noh is an integrated combination of stylized gesture, expressive dance, powerful chant, elegant mask, and intricate percussion, creating a uniquely mysterious and memorable beauty.
Internationally acclaimed Noh Theatre masters Akira Matsui (designated an Important Intangible Cultural Asset by the government of Japan in 1998) and Richard Emmert will travel from Japan to mentor and collaborate with Canadian performing artists. Canadian performers include: David Fujino, Simon Hayama, Kenji Maeda, Michael Robinson, Ari Solomon, Minoru Yamamoto, and Raugi Yu.
This workshop presentation will consist of:
a.. An introductory demonstration on traditional Japanese Noh Theatre by Noh masters Akira Matsui and Richard Emmert.
b.. A staged-reading of The Gull (the culmination of a two-week workshop of the play).
c.. A question and answer session, giving the audience an opportunity to respond to the play.
d.. Refreshments and informal discussion.
There are two presentations:
May 6 7:30pm at the Gulf of Georgia Cannery National Historic Site.
12138 Fourth Avenue, Richmond, BC
