The Western theatre has long been accused of being the site of mysterious, albeit vaguely defined, moral iniquity, while at the same time it has often been embraced as an instrument of moral reform and social improvement. Theatre Symposium invites papers that address the topic of Theatre and the Moral Order, March 31-April 2, 2006 at Agnes Scott College in Atlanta, Georgia. How, throughout history, has the theatre been viewed as either upholding and improving, or working against the moral and ethical standards of its time?
Theatre Symposium is an annual gathering of theatre scholars and practitioners who meet to read and discuss papers on a pre-selected topic. Selected papers from the Symposium are published every year in Theatre Symposium the journal of the Southeastern Theatre Conference.
Possible areas of exploration include but are not limited to
* Theatre and the "culture wars"
* Moral reform movements and the stage
* Censorship controversies
* The effect of the theatre on its audiences (riots, protests, etc.)
* The theatre as "rational" recreation
* Temperance Drama
* Anti-theatrical protests and controversies
* Intersections between religious movements and the stage
* Or any other subjects, contemporary and historical, that resonate with the topic.
Papers may address contemporary practice or any historical period. Papers that address the topic in a non-Western context are also welcome and encouraged. One-page paper abstracts for the 2006 Symposium may be sent to
