PhD in PERFORMANCE STUDIES

The PhD consists of three strands:
1) History, theory and criticism of Theatre, Dance and Performance
Studies primarily in the Twentieth Century
2) Combinations of history, theory and criticism, with performance
practice (applicants should have at least 10 years of practice)
3) Documentation and critique of previous professional and creative
work (only open to applicants with at least 20 to 30 years professional
practice)
Scholarly interests include social and political performance, anthropology
and ethnology, the body, ethnicity and identity, con/textual studies of
performance scripts, and feminist theory and alternative democratic
practices.
Practices include theatre, political intervention, choreography, dance and
movement, dramaturgy, transdisciplinary installations and explorations, the
visual arts.
Areas of study include theatre, dance and performance primarily from the
North, Central and South Americas, Europe and Asia.
The program is creative and exploratory, theoretically rigorous, with the
possibility of extensive interdisciplinary work. Our aim is to encourage
cooperation and collaboration between theory and practice, criticism and
performance. Faculty include the current President of CORD, and the Director
of the University of California Research Group in International Performance
and Culture.
