MA South Asian Theatre
First Intake 2008/9
The MA South
Asian Theatre takes note of the large South Asian diaspora population in
the UK and complex ways in
which South Asian and UK
histories relate. The modules that constitute the MA initially provide all
students with a common grounding in knowledge and practical experience of drama
and theatre appropriate to postgraduate level, as well as a sound training in
postgraduate research methods. This training will allow students to conduct
research relevant to their MA, while also serving to prepare students who want
to take their postgraduate education further to M.Phil. or Ph.D. research
degrees. In the two further taught modules on the MA South Asian Theatre students will encounter South Asian concepts
about the origins of drama and theatre and study the development of South Asian
drama and theatre from classical times to the present, including most recent
developments in the UK.
Upon successful completion of the taught component of the course, students
embark on a dissertation on an approved topic of their choice, or on an
approved practical project in lieu of dissertation. The MA South Asian Theatre has been developed, and is predominantly
taught, by Dr Sreenath
Nair, who is originally from Kerala, South India; he
studied, trained, taught and engaged in theatre practice both in India and the
UK, and thus brings both perspectives, from South Asia and from the UK, to his
understanding of the course contents and to his teaching of it.
MA Theatre and Consciousness
First Intake 2009/10
The MA
Theatre and Consciousness is the first and only taught MA scheme in the UK (and
possibly world-wide) to investigate important phenomena, experiences and issues
of and in relation to theatre from the perspective of consciousness studies. For
the last fifteen years, many disciplines of learning have seen a remarkable
rise of interest in human consciousness. Interest in the relationship of
consciousness to literature and theatre has equally grown. In most cases, insights
from consciousness studies have been used to better understand works of
literature, plays, processes of theatre and aspects of creative writing. The MA
convenor, Professor Daniel
Meyer-Dinkgräfe, has spear-headed this development with his own publications

The MA Theatre and Consciousness provides all students with grounding in
issues of drama and theatre studies at postgraduate level, and a module in
postgraduate research methods. Students then learn about a range of questions
relevant to understanding the phenomenon of theatre against a consciousness
studies background. After the taught modules that make up the majority of the
degree scheme, students write a dissertation on a relevant topic of their
choice, or engage in a practical project in lieu of the dissertation.
