[apologies for cross-posting if you've heard about this...]
Further to Jerry's message, I just heard R.H. Thomson on CBC Radio,
Sunday Edition, yesterday (2 Nov). He spoke of producing a very
interesting and imaginative event: Vigile 1914-1918 to be enacted
between 4-11 November, started at Canada House in London and then across
Canada from province to province. The statement on their website
describes the project as:
"At sunset November 4th through to sunrise November 11th, this site will
present a vigil commemorating the 68,000 Canadians who lost their lives
in WWI. The names of the 68,000 war dead will be projected over a week
of nights onto the National War Memorial in Ottawa, buildings in other
regions of Canada and onto the side of Canada House in Trafalgar
Square in London, England."
Thomson spoke of metaphorically bringing the dead home (the dead from
WWI were not allowed to be repatriated) and the projection of their
names, moving across the country, as the dead walking across the whole
country, back home. A very moving image. Families and friends can go
the the website and search for their dead, find when their names will be
projected and follow the movement, on-line, site to site from London and
across Canada.
You can still hear the interview on the Sunday Edition website
http://www.cbc.ca/thesundayedition/ and the Vigile 1914-1918 website is
at http://www.1914-1918.ca/
Cheers, -- Kathy.
