Tony Harrison, Britain’s leading film and theatre poet, will be in
residence at Green College, UBC as a Visiting Professor from November
25 – December 1, 2008.
Tony Harrison has written nearly a dozen plays for London’s National
Theatre,including his most recent play, Fram. He is the author of
translations for The Royal Shakespeare Company, libretto for the New
York Metropolitan Opera, and plays for production in Nigeria, Greece,
and Austria. Harrison’s poem V. caused a national uproar when a
filmed version was broadcast on television.
While at Green College, Tony Harrison will host a series of free
workshops, readings, and presentations that are open to all:

Tony Harrison and award-winning actress Sian Thomas lead a master
class at UBC on reading poetry aloud and delivering verse in
performance. Some participants will have the opportunity to continue
working with Harrison and Thomas on the delivery of verse and to
perform scenes from Harrison’s plays as part of his final event at UBC
on Monday, December 1.

Tony Harrison Presents: Black Daisies for the Bride

A screening of Tony Harrison’s film/poem Black Daisies For The Bride
(1993), directed by Peter Symes, with specially arranged score by
Dominic Muldowney. The film focuses on three female Alzheimer’s
patients, all real, one of them a former opera singer who can now
trill only two or three notes from Madame Butterfly.

Tony Harrison talks about his life and thirty-five-year career in the
British Theatre. He will also introduce performances of scenes from
his plays by participants from his UBC workshop on the delivery of
verse.
