CALL FOR PAPERS

*The Scenography Working Group*

of the

*International Federation for Theatre Research (IFTR)*

is soliciting papers proposals for

**IFTR 2009**

**14-17 July, Lisbon, Portugal,**

at the *Centro de Estudos de Teatro (Centre for Theatre Studies)*

**University of Lisbon**

Mission Statement:

The Scenography Working Group aims to nurture and develop new

contributions to practice-led research, history and theory of Scenography,

through a specific program of working group meetings, presentations and

publication. The working group also provides opportunities for

scenographers and designers to discuss their practice and exchange ideas

in an international academic forum.

The group's research focuses upon the history, theory, aesthetics and

practice of scenography. Our research investigates scenic elements,

costume, make-up, sound design, lighting design, masks, puppet and

object theatre and other visual design and their proxemic relationship to

performers and audience, in traditional and non-traditional spaces. Such

research considers both contemporary practice as well influences of

scenic practices upon subsequent theatre developments.

The main conference theme for 2009 is

*Silent Voices / Forbidden Lives: Censorship and Performance.*

The Scenography Working Group invites submissions related to the main

conference theme and our mission statement (above),

with specific reference to

THE POLITICS OF THEATRE SPACE:

CENSORSHIP AND OTHER CONSTRAINTS

whereas censorship and/or constraints in scenography may be of different

kinds: institutional, political, governmental, financial, technological,

aesthetical, etc.

Specific subjects for investigation also include:

- making choices and taking stands with the double edged sword of

scenography: how the practice of concealment and reveal will suppress

and generate alternative realities

- design in situ: raising ghosts when digging in the environment, or how to

play the site-specific bogeyman

- loading the scenographic metaphor: how the property or costume speaks

with uncensored voice when the performer is rendered silent

- costuming and censorship: putting the body away/wrapping us in new

armour

Participants may be interested in the follow-up of one work (drama, musical,

opera) through its different productions.

* Priority will be given to presentations that explore the suggested

subjects from any historical, contemporary or theoretical perspective.

There will also be an OPEN SESSION for presentations that do not

address these subjects but that address the mission statement of the SWG *
