Performing Site-Specific Theatre

Edited by Anna Birch and Joanne Tompkins

This edited collection seeks to interrogate current trends, practices,
and implications of performance in which site/location/landscape is
central. It will cover analyses of 'site' at its most local, specific,
and actual. It will address site-specificity in the realm of the global
and globalisation. It will situate site-specificity beyond the 'purely'
spatial in order to examine what new/different discourses appear to
emerge.

Submissions are welcome for papers on the following topics:

* The material implications of and requirements for site-specific
performance

* The interplay between the spatiality of site-specificity and
embodiment

*        Gendering sites

* Differentiating between site-specificity in urban and rural
contexts

*        Site-specificity and cultural/political transformation

*        Performativity and site-specificity

* Sites of 'legitimacy,' 'illegitimacy,' and liminality

*        The languages of site-specificity

*        The 'legislations' of site-specificity

*        Site-specificity and social space

This book is not a history of site-specificity, but examinations of
historicity are welcome. It is also not a history of particular examples
of site-specificity, but the well-argued documentation of examples of
site-specific performance (particularly in an international context) is
also welcome. Topics that fall outside the range of this list may also
be considered.

Expressions of Interest due 13 November 2009. Please send a 250 word
abstract to Anna Birch (annabirch1 at mac.com) or Joanne Tompkins
(j.tompkins at uq.edu.au). The deadline for full papers is 31 July 2010,
with an anticipated publication date of late 2011.

Apologies for cross-posting
