CALL FOR PAPERS
LGBT Focus Group
Association for Theatre in Higher Education (ATHE) Conference
August 3--6, 2010, Hyatt Century Plaza Hotel, Los Angeles
Submissions Deadlines:
Individual Papers: October 15, send to Dr. Frank Miller, frnklin2001 at yahoo.com
Complete Panels: November 1, submit online to ATHE at www.athe.org
The LGBT Focus Group of the Alliance for Theatre in Higher Education
(ATHE) invites panel proposals for ATHE 2010 in Los Angeles. Although
papers on all topics related to theatre in general and LGBT issues in
particular will be considered, we particularly encourage participants
to develop ideas related to the conference theme of "Theatre Alive:
Theatre, Media and Survival" and the Focus Group theme, "Alive and
Kicking (Back)."
"I feel groggy and weary and tragic
Punchy and bleary and fresh out of magic
But alive, but alive, but alive!"
--Lee Adams, lyrics to "But Alive" from APPLAUSE
As the conference as a whole looks at the ways in which the growth of
media and other new technologies have affected the theatre, the LGBT
Focus Group is interested in panels exploring the specific ways LGBT
artists, educators, students and audiences fit into the equation.
Questions to be considered could include:
What means have LGBT theatre and theatre pedagogy developed to resist
the incursion of media on our audience and our art form?
What new opportunities do media offer LGBT theatre artists and theatre
teachers?
How do LGBT theatre artists use new technologies to queer the
theatrical event?
What specifically characterizes the aliveness of LGBT theatre and
theatrical events?
Beyond new media and technologies, what other social, cultural,
economic and political forces are LGBT theatre artists and teachers
"kicking back" against, and what uniquely queer ways of “kicking back”
have we developed as tools of resistance?
What has the media done to define and even change LGBT bodies and how
have LGBT peoples tried to seize control of the discourse?
In what ways do we find ourselves "mediated" by new cultural forces,
and how are we adapting to those changes?
INFORMATION ON SUBMITTING PROPOSALS:
1. Completed proposals (with all panel members assembled) may be
submitted directly to ATHE at www.athe.org by November 1, 2009. Please
forward a copy of your completed proposal to Frank Miller (frnklin2001 at yahoo.com
). PLEASE NOTE THAT ALL TECHNOLOGY REQUESTS MUST BE INCLUDED IN YOUR
COMPLETED PROPOSAL. (ATHE cannot accommodate AV needs submitted after
November 1 without substantial cost to the individual presenter.)
2. While complete sessions are strongly encouraged, individual paper
proposals may be submitted to LGBT Focus Group Conference Planner, Dr.
Frank Miller, at frnklin2001 at yahoo.com. I will attempt to group
submissions into cohesive panels, but cannot guarantee inclusion. In
order to be considered, individual proposals must be submitted by
OCTOBER 15, 2009. Abstracts (250 words) must include paper title and
contact information, and must specify any AV needs. ATHE does not
accept individual paper submissions -- DO NOT submit your individual
proposal on the ATHE website. Individuals wishing to identify
colleagues to create panels prior to the November 1st deadline may use
the LGBT listserv: LGBT at LISTSERV.COFC.EDU to circulate questions or
possible panel topics.
3. All AV and technology is fee-based this year. Grants for AV
support are available and encouraged. To apply, follow the directions
on the proposal submissions form and fill out any additional
information required. You will be notified of grant monies at the same
time as the status of your panel. ATHE cannot accommodate AV needs
submitted after November 1st without substantial cost to the
individual presenter.
4. Please note that ATHE runs from Tuesday-Friday in 2010. The
application form will not accept scheduling preferences this year.
5. Presenters wishing to create multidisciplinary panels must
contact the Focus Group Conference Planners for each of the THREE
groups they propose as MD panels that do not complete this step are
likely to be rejected.
6. Presenters proposing programs outside of the traditional panel
format are asked to be specific in their proposals concerning the
structure and number of participants so that ATHE can be notified
about space/time needs.
7. ATHE will notify the LGBT Focus Group concerning accepted or
rejected panels by late February. Panelists should expect to hear from
the Conference Planner or their Panel Chair by early March.
