Applications are invited for a full-time, tenure-track position in
*Theatre Studies*, at the rank of Assistant Professor, with
undergraduate and graduate teaching responsibilities, effective July 1,
2012.
The successful candidate for the position will have a strong historical
and theoretical background and be willing to make a long-term
contribution to the Department's core courses, as well as to offer
specialized topics at the senior undergraduate and graduate levels.
Applicants for the position are expected to have strong capability for
and interest in teaching at least one of the four large-scale survey
courses, which include Theatre History from the Beginnings through the
Renaissance; Restoration to Modern; Canadian Theatre to 1980; and
Contemporary Theatre, including a focus on Canadian theatre and drama
1980 to the present.
York's Department of Theatre has over 400 students pursuing BFA or BA
degrees in performance, devised theatre, theatre studies, playwriting,
production and design.At the graduate level, the department offers an MA
and PhD in Theatre Studies, and an MFA in Acting and Directing, with a
directing partnership with Canadian Stage (a large professional regional
theatre), as well as a Diploma in Voice Teaching.The Department is also
in the forefront of developing sustainability in design for performance,
and has inaugurated an MFA in Design. The Faculty of Fine Arts at York,
located in Toronto, also includes Departments of Dance, Design, Film,
Music, and Visual Arts.
Candidates will have a PhD in Theatre or a related field, and should
show excellence or promise of excellence in teaching, and in scholarly
research and publication, in addition to a commitment to department and
university-wide service.While this is an academic appointment in Theatre
Studies, practical theatre experience will be a preferred asset. An
interest in and knowledge of Canadian theatre is also strongly
preferred. The successful candidate must be immediately appointable to
the Faculty of Graduate Studies, and ready and willing to teach in the
MA/PhD program and to supervise doctoral candidates.Salary will be
commensurate with the qualifications and experience of the candidate.
