Designing the Performance Spaces
Dates: 22 to 26 June, 2011, Prague CZ

This international conference coincides with the Prague Quadrennial 2011, and is prepared by the Arts and Theatre Institute Prague and the Faculty of Arts, Charles University in Prague, in association with the Scenography Working Group of the International Federation for Theatre Research. Brought together under the umbrella of global scenographic practice for theatrical, visual, events and exhibition design, this conference invites theatre professionals and scholars to dialogue on historical and contemporary trends concerned with the creation of meaning through visual, spatial, and aural design of performance and presentational spaces.

Conference theme: What is the role of the scenographer/designer in the creation and production of meaning?

Paper proposals should address the conference theme and may be oriented to relevant sub-topics. Already more than 25 excellent proposals from the international community have been received. This promises to be a valuable and engaging event.

Topics include:

- Scenography at the centre: scenographers as auteurs/director-designers
- Post-dramatic scenography
- Configuring scenographic discourses: negotiating cultural codes in the performance space, scenographic analysis of performance events
- Scenography pedagogy: what is taught, why and how does it define and influence design for performance spaces
- From artisan to artist to director and curator shifting demands upon and agendas for the presentational space
- Scenography of paratheatrical events and public entertainments (such as zoos, raves, reenactments, exhibitions, sport, touristic performances)
- Migrations of persons and peoples: the impact on visual culture and sound design: the acoustics of the trajectory
- Modeling the Space: intermediate stages and processes of scenographic development
Additional sub-topics and an open panel program may be considered.

The conveners of the Scenography Working Group of the IFTR will review presentation proposals.  Proposals (ca. 300 words) should be accompanied by a brief biography, and sent by email to Prof. David Vivian (Brock

Second Deadline: 14 March, 2011.

All proposal submissions will be considered and official invitations will be forwarded to successful candidates.  Selection of successful proposals will be completed within three weeks after the first closing date.  Time and space permitting, proposals will be received until the May 7th deadline for registration.

Les espaces du théâtre et leur conception
22-26 juin 2011 (Prague, République Tchèque)

Cette conférence internationale, qui coïncide avec la Quadriennale de Prague 2011, est organisée par l’Institut des Arts et du Théâtre de Prague et par la Faculté des Arts de l’Université Charles (Prague) en association avec le groupe de travail en Scénographie de la Fédération Internationale de Recherches Théâtrales. Dans le cadre global des pratiques scénographiques dans le design en arts dramatiques et visuels, pour événements et expositions, cette conférence invite les professionnels et les chercheurs du théâtre à échanger sur les tendances historiques et contemporaines dans la création de signification à travers le design visuel, spatial et aural des espaces de présentation et de représentation.

Thème de la conférence : Quel est le rôle du scénographe/designer dans la création et la production de signification ?

Les précis des communications répondront au thème de la conférence et s’orienteront volontiers vers des sous-thèmes tels que ci-dessous :

- La scénographie au centre : scénographes à la fois auteurs/metteurs-en-scène-designers
- Scénographie post-théâtrale
- Configuration des discours scénographiques : négociations des codes culturels dans l’espace théâtral, analyse scénographique de représentations
- Scénographie et pédagogie : l’enseignement, pourquoi et comment il définit et influence le design des espaces de représentation
- Depuis l’artisan et l’artiste jusqu’au metteur en scène et au curateur – l’espace de présentation et les fluctuations des exigences et des programmes
- Scénographie du para-théâtre et des animations publiques (par exemple, zoos, raves, reconstitutions historiques, expositions, sport, représentations touristiques)
- Migrations d’individus et de groupes : l’impact sur la culture visuelle et le design sonore : acoustiques de la trajectoire
- Formuler l’espace : stades intermédiaires et processus de la conception scénographique

Seront aussi considérés les propositions de tout autre sous-thème et de sessions libres.

Les organisateurs du groupe de travail en Scénographie (FIRT) examineront les précis soumis. Chaque précis (environ 300 mots) sera accompagné d’une brève biographie et envoyé par courriel à Professeur David Vivian (Université Brock, Canada) : david.sceno at gmail.com

Deuxième échéance : 14 mars 2011 

Tous les précis seront considérés ; une invitation officielle sera envoyée aux candidats choisis.

La sélection des précis aura lieu dans un délai de trois semaines après la première échéance. Selon le temps et le lieu, les précis seront reçus jusqu’au 7 mai, date limite des inscriptions.
