Call for Papers for the International Conference
“Crossing Boundaries: Commedia Dell’ Arte Across Gender, Genre, and
Geography”
February 15 – 17, 2013, Windsor, Ontario, Canada.
Organized by the School of Dramatic Art and Humanities Research Group
at the University of Windsor.
This two-and-a-half day conference features the well known author,
playwright, and translator, John Rudlin, and renowned guest artist, Antonio
Fava.
The schedule of activities offers a rare opportunity to work with well
known international guests and includes a key-note address and plenary
panel discussion with John Rudlin and workshops by Maestro Fava. In
addition, participants can expect exciting lecture-demonstrations,
international scholarly paper presentations, actor training techniques,
student and guest performances, a mask exhibition, literature reviews, and
discussions in historical and gender perspectives in cultural studies.
Paper topics may include, but are not limited to:
· The transmission of performance knowledge in the Golden Age of the
Commedia Dell’ Arte;
· Performance text and the impromptu tradition;
· Specific training approaches: Meyerhold, Giorgio Strehler and the
Piccolo Teatro di Milano, Antonio Fava, Jacques Lecoq;
· Specific aspects of training related to research in improvisation,
comic tempi, dialects, grammelot, mask performance technique, mask
design and creation;
· Transgression of Commedia Dell’ Arte in gender studies;
· Commedia Dell’ Arte in other performing arts: circus, opera,
puppetry, etc;
· Commedia Dell’ Arte and interculturalism;
· Commedia Dell’ Arte and Shakespeare characters.
The conference is open to various presentation formats; from academic
presentations with a historical focus to lecture-demonstrations.
Presentations may be in English or French and should be 20 minutes in
length for paper presentations and 60 - 90 minutes for
lecture-demonstrations or workshops.
Proposals should include the following:
· Your name, title (faculty, independent scholar, practitioner,
artist), and academic or company affiliation.
· Your contact information (particularly email) and a short bio.
· The format of your presentation and time frame.
· The title and abstract for your paper or presentation. Please limit
abstracts to 250 words.
· Any special requests, technical requirements, and/or space needs for
your presentation.

will be sent by November 15, 2012.
