Call For Papers* for /Canadian Theatre Review/ Issue 156 on "Archives"
(due out Fall 2013)

Edited by Kathryn Harvey (University of Guelph) and Jenn Stephenson
(Queen's University)

Talk about archives has become all the rage in recent years, especially
in the social sciences and humanities disciplines. Within the realm of
theatre history and performance, the topic is also taking on greater
profile. Witness the previous years' "Tyranny of Documents" sessions at
Canadian Association for Theatre Research Conferences and the upcoming
2013 Conference "Performance History Seminar" which look at the
relationship between documentary evidence and practice. Little, though,
has been written specifically on the issues pertaining to the unique
(and some not so unique) characteristics of performing arts archives,
the challenges of archivists working in them, and the challenges of
researchers using them.

This CTR issue will address a diversity of both theoretical and
practical topics regarding performing arts archives. Suggested topics
include but are not limited to the following:
. Theatre archives and new/social media (attracting new audiences,
developing new ways of teaching archival literacy)
. Complexities of providing licensing rights of production images,
cast/individual photos, etc. for publication and broadcast (copyright,
Equity, donor restrictions)
. Specific uses of archives by scholars and practitioners (for
studying dramaturgy, historical performances, theatre company histories,
approaches to lighting design, etc.)
. Collaborations between and among theatre companies & their
archives, archives & museums, etc. for education and outreach
. Pedagogical issues regarding collaborations of archivists and
university faculty to bring students into theatre archives: What are the
expected learning outcomes? How does one teach archival literacy through
theatre archives? Why would one use archives to teach about theatre?
. Archives as theatre, or conversely, theatre in archives
. Epistemological, hermeneutical, post-colonial, feminist, queer, and
other approaches to theatre historiography and the role of archives

Essentially if you have an idea, run it by us!

Please keep in mind that we are looking for articles that tackle a
specific research question, so please try to stay away from straight
description of archives' holdings and from case studies with no or
little analysis.

Please send initial paper proposals of no more than 500 words, along
with a brief biography, to Kathryn Harvey at the University of Guelph
(kaharvey at uoguelph.ca <mailto:kaharvey at uoguelph.ca>). *Deadline for
submission is January 18, 2013. Papers will be due no later than April
15, 2013.*
