histories of acting/directing

I'm beginning to think about preparing to plan a first year intro to theatre course. Can anyone recommend a good history of acting? For me, not as a text book. A (brief) history of directing might be good too. (Obviously a western focus implied here, but I'm open to comparative or 'world' histories). Jean Benedetti's Art of the Actor has been suggested: Anyone know it?
