Applications are invited for the position of Postdoctoral Research Fellow to work as a member of the AHRC-funded project ‘Sequins, Self & Struggle: Performing and Archiving Sex, Place and Class in Pageant Competitions in Cape Town’, based in the Department of Drama & Theatre at Royal Holloway, University of London. We are looking for applicants with research expertise in South African archives and performance histories with an interest in developing their own knowledge around the specificities of Cape Town’s cultural and political landscape. Candidates with research specialisms in gender, sexuality, historiography and/or archives and with experience and interest in collaborative research practices and social engagement are particularly encouraged. The project is highly interdisciplinary and draws on fields such as gender and queer studies, performance studies, cultural geography, African studies and visual culture.
We are seeking applications from highly motivated candidates who will contribute to the development of culturally and socially engaged collaborative research; a digital archive on pageant competitions in Cape Town; and the organization of an international symposium in London in July 2015.
Candidates are expected to hold a PhD in Theatre and Performance Studies, African Studies, Cultural Geography, Visual Culture or other related field. A working knowledge of Afrikaans would be of great value to the project, though it is not a requirement of the position.
This is a full-time, fixed-term post available from 1 March 2015 or as soon as possible thereafter for a fixed term period of 6 months. This post is based in Egham, where the College is situated in a beautiful, leafy campus near to Windsor Great Park and within commuting distance from London.
