> National University of Ireland, Galway is seeking to fill a full-time, fixed term Postdoctoral Researcher position for the project ‘Interculturalism, Migration and Performance in Contemporary Ireland.’ The position is funded by the Irish Research Council, under the Starter Research Projects Grants Scheme, 2013 and is available from 15 September 2014 to 15 September 2015.

> The Postdoctoral Researcher will be based in the Moore Institute (www.mooreinstitute.ie/) and will be affiliiated to the Centre for Drama, Theatre and Performance. He/she will have dedicated research space at the newly opened Hardiman Research Building  at NUI Galway.

> The post is being filled at a time when Drama is enjoying significant development at NUI Galway, as shown by the recent establishment of the Druid Academy at the university, the digitisation of the archive of the Abbey Theatre, and many other exciting innovations (see www.nuigalway.ie/drama/ for further details). The university also has major strenghts in the areas of interculturalism and migration studies. Its multi-disciplinary MA in Culture and Colonialism was established in the late 1990s and has quickly become one of the leading programmes in this area internationally. Across the university, there are strenghts in related areas such as Human Rights, the study of the Creative Industries, and so on.

> Interculturalism, Migration and Performance in Contemporary Ireland
> 
> This project analyses the role of interculturalism in Irish theatre and performance from 1994-2013, hypothesising that Irish interculturalism is unique internationally. Between 1996 and 2011, the non-Irish born population of Ireland grew from less than 5% to 17%. This project assesses Irish strategies of interculturalism as a response to rapid inward-migration.
> 
> This project aims to make a major intervention in the field of theatre and performance studies by investigating Irish interculturalism as a social process as well as a technique of aesthetic innovation. It is the first research project to consider the intersection of aesthetic and social theories of interculturalism in both an Irish and European context.
> 
> This project will consider the consequences that arise when the arts are used to further state-sponsored intercultural goals. It will examine the work of Irish theatre artists, public festivals and community arts or social organisations that focus on intercultural themes.
> This project assesses the limits and possibilities of Irish interculturalism by considering the relationship between its social and aesthetic goals. It will facilitate greater understanding of the relationship between the state, migration, national identities and the arts. This case study poses urgent international consequences amid continuing debates about migration, diversity and social cohesion in the European Union and other national contexts.

> The postdoctoral researcher will work closely with the Principal Investigator (PI) to investigate how the context of inward-migration challenges available models of aesthetic interculturalism in theatre and performance studies. The successful applicant will work with the PI to develop the Irish case study into a comparative project on migration, social policy and performance in the European Union and will collaborate on developing a research network and preparing major funding applications for future projects. 
> The work of the postdoctoral researcher includes the following duties:  
> a.    Complete at least two scholarly articles for publication in international peer-reviewed journals. 
> b.    Carry out interviews with stakeholders including but not limited to theatre-makers, artists and participants in area intercultural organisations. 
> c.    Transcribe and write up the results of these interviews.   
> d.    Report writing, including reviews of the literature.
> e.    Preparation of papers for dissemination (presentation and publication)
> f.    Co-produce an edited collection and a special journal issue on migration and interculturalism with PI with duties including the co-authoring of joint introductions.    
> g.    Research and develop two new service-learning courses on the themes of interculturalism and theatre at undergraduate and 
> postgraduate level. 
> h.    Plan and deliver in collaboration with the PI a major international symposium on “Performance and Interculturalism Now.”
> i.    Contribute new areas of expertise to the Centre for Theatre and Performance, the Moore Institute, and the NUI Galway research community at large through participation in the monthly research seminar among other duties. 
> j.    Drafting of funding applications based on the outputs of postdoctoral researcher. 
> k.    Associated administrative duties, especially relating to outreach activities.
> Qualifications
> The post is ideally suited to scholars with a background in theatre studies and/or interculturalism, but applications are welcome from candidates who can display a capacity to acquire such knowledge quickly. 
> 
> Suitable candidates should meet the following criteria:
> •    PhD in Drama/Theatre, Performance Studies, Cultural Studies, Gender and Women’s Studies, Ethnic Studies, or related area.
> •    Some knowledge of migration or diaspora studies.
> •    Some experience of drama facilitation and/or applied theatre. 
> •    A record of peer-reviewed publication 
> •    Experience of research report-writing, and excellent writing skills.
> •    Ability to work both collaboratively and independently.
> •    Highly motivated, with excellent organisational skills.
> •    Ability to contribute to the development of Drama at NUI Galway, and to the research culture of the Moore Institute. 
> 
> It is also desirable that suitable candidates have experience in some or all of the following areas
> •    Knowledge of any of the following languages: Polish, Lithuanian, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Irish, Portugese, Greek or other languages as relevant to the broader field of migration and diaspora studies.
> •    Significant knowledge of Irish theatre and performance. 
> •    Experience of archival research.
> •    Some knowledge of IT skills.
