Festival Theatre:
Magnetic North Theatre Festival

The Magnetic North Theatre Festival (MNTF) takes place in Ottawa this year, and students in this three-credit undergraduate course will explore its past, present and future during one intense week focusing on theatre history, performance analysis and criticism. Students are expected to see all nine MNTF shows outside of class time (evenings and weekend) and must show proof of purchase of a Festival Pass, which is available at a discounted rate of $200 ($175 before May 15th) for those registered in the course.

PROFESSOR
Dr. Karen Fricker is assistant professor in the Department of Dramatic Arts at Brock University and an adjunct professor in the Department of Theatre at the University of Ottawa. Her research interests include contemporary theatre and globalization; contemporary Québec theatre; popular performances of nation and cultural identities; Irish theatre; and theatre criticism. Her co-edited volume, with Milija Gluhovic, Performing the 'New' Europe: Identities, Feelings, and Politics in the Eurovision Song Contest, was published in 2013 by Palgrave Macmillan), and she is completing a monograph, Making Theatre Global: Robert Lepage's Original Stage Productions for Manchester University Press. Karen is a professional theatre critic and the founding editor in chief of Irish Theatre Magazine. She has reviewed and broadcast for The Guardian, Variety, The Irish Times, The New York Times, BBC, RTÉ, and the CBC, amongst other outlets. From 2007-2012 she was a lecturer in Drama and Theatre at Royal Holloway, University of London and in autumn 2012 was the Eakin Visiting Scholar at the McGill Institute for the Study of Canada in Montréal, where she received the Charles Bronfman and Rita Mayo Award for Excellence in Teaching.

SCHEDULE AND TIMES

This intensive course runs June 4-12. Classes are daily from 9-12 and 1-4, with obligatory festival attendance in the evening. There are no classes on June 6 and 7, but students will be expected to attend multiple festival shows.

WHO MAY REGISTER

1.      University of Ottawa undergraduate students may register as of Wednesday, April 1st, 2015.

COST

All students are required to show proof of purchase of a Magnetic North festival pass. A discounted pass is available to students in this course at the early bird rate of $175 before May 15 or $200 after that date. In order to purchase the pass, please contact Dr Kathryn Prince (kprince at uottawa.ca<mailto:kprince at uottawa.ca>) who will provide you with the form and purchasing information. Students who cannot show proof of purchase on June 4 will be withdrawn from the course in order to accommodate students on the waiting list.

REQUIRED TEXTS
This is primarily a theatregoing class, not a reading one. All assigned readings - mainly reviews of the MNTF productions - will be provided via the University of Ottawa's Virtual Campus.
