General Call for Papers

The 2016 Canadian Association for Theatre Research (CATR) Conference will take place at the University of Calgary’s School of Creative and Performing Arts from Saturday May 28 - 31 2016, as part of the Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences (CHSS).

In celebration of the University of Calgary’s 50th anniversary, the theme of this year’s Congress is “Energizing Communities”. As usual, the Program Committee welcomes proposals for papers of all kinds from CATR members, but encourages applicants to consider the conference theme as they plan their submissions. By way of assistance, we offer the following prompt:

The potential inherent in the concept of “community”, as well as the significant challenges associated with its realization, have been the topic of extensive consideration over many decades of theatre and performance scholarship and practice.

We welcome proposals that engage with existing theatre and performance discourses on “community", reappraising their relevance in twenty-first century contexts in Canada and abroad. However, we also encourage the exploration of contemporary mobilizations of “community” within theatre and performance practice at this historical moment. What politics surround “community” today? When, where, and for whom does the concept continue to draw strength and power? How do the often complex intersections between arts funding bodies, specific artistic practices and practitioners, academic institutions, and diversified local constituencies shape the creation and dissolution of community formations today, in Canada and beyond?  

Bearing in mind our conference location, we extend a special welcome to proposals that engage with these or related issues in the Calgary region.

Please note: this is a general call for papers for open panel sessions. Calls for curated panels, seminars, workshops and roundtables will be issued separately and individually, and are also accessible on our website.

Colloque de l’ACRT 2016, Université de Calgary

Appel de propositions de communication

Le prochain colloque annuel de l’Association canadienne de la recherche théâtrale se tiendra à l’École des arts de la scène de l’Université de Calgary du 28 au 31 mai 2016, lors du grand Congrès des sciences humaines du CRSH.

Alors que l’Université de Calgary célèbrera son 50e anniversaire, le colloque aura pour thème « Energizing Communities » / « Collectivités dynamiques ». Comme toujours, le comité organisateur accueillera les propositions de tous les types, mais invite les membres de l’ACRT à tenir compte du thème en préparant leur offre. Voici un énoncé qui pourra vous guider dans votre rédaction :

Le potentiel inhérent au concept de collectivité, à l’instar des défis significatifs associés à son incarnation, a été largement couvert tant par la recherche que par la pratique théâtrale depuis des décennies.

Nous souhaitons recevoir ses propositions ouvrant le dialogue entre les discours actuels sur la collectivité dans la pratique théâtrale et performative afin de réévaluer leur pertinence au 21e siècle, au Canada comme à l’étranger. Nous encourageons également l’exploration de la mobilisation collective dans nos pratiques en lien avec ce contexte. Dans quelles politiques les collectivités s’inscrivent-elles aujourd’hui? Pour qui, où et quand ce concept a-t-il toujours un pouvoir d’attraction? Comment les relations parfois complexes entre les entités subventionnaires des arts, les pratiques artistiques de niche et leurs praticiens, les institutions d’enseignement et les divers paliers locaux de gouvernement orientent-elles la création et la dissolution des formations communautaires de nos jours, ici et ailleurs?

Ayant en tête le lieu de notre prochain colloque, nous tendons également l’oreille aux propositions qui discuteront de questions autour de la région de Calgary.

À noter : il s’agit d’un appel de propositions pour les débats uniquement. Les appels de communications pour les séances thématiques, les séminaires, les ateliers et les tables rondes seront lancés séparément et individuellement. Vous pouvez aussi en prendre connaissance sur notre site Web.
