The Centre for Drama, Theatre and Performance Studies, in the Faculty of Arts and Science, at the University of Toronto, seeks applications for a tenure-stream position in the area of Theatre and Performance History at the rank of Assistant Professor. The appointment will commence on July 1, 2016.

Applicants must have earned a Ph.D. in Drama, Theatre and Performance Studies or a related field, by the date of appointment or shortly thereafter, with a demonstrated record of excellence in teaching and research in theatre and performance history. Strong evidence of research excellence will be demonstrated through publications in leading journals in the field, presentations at significant conferences and strong endorsements by referees. Evidence of excellence in teaching will be demonstrated through teaching accomplishments, letters of reference, and the teaching dossier submitted as part of the application. 

We are interested in scholars who: have a teaching knowledge of the history and historiography of theatre in Europe and North America between 1500 and 1850, with research specializations within that range; who approach theatre and performance studies from an interdisciplinary perspective through historically and theoretically grounded research in cultural studies, critical race and/or ethnic studies, and/or the visual arts, music, and dance; who have proven teaching/research interests in the contemporary performance practice of historical texts; and who have experience working with students in theatrical performance. A knowledge of performance history in a language other than English would be an asset.

Candidates should have the ability to teach a broad range of courses in an undergraduate theatre curriculum, including Western and post-colonial theatre histories, and to combine the teaching of theory/history and performance practice at all levels. We especially seek candidates with a commitment to shaping the future of the discipline through a strong commitment to teaching as well as in their particular area of research. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The successful applicant will serve the diverse interests of our undergraduate student population and contribute to research-intensive masters and doctoral programs with a large interdisciplinary faculty. Both undergraduate and graduate programs have a mandate to provide an interdisciplinary and practice-based academic focus. The successful applicant will integrate teaching and research in both graduate and undergraduate programs and increase our international profile with respect both to research and education.
