CFP: Special Session on “Theatre-Fiction” at MLA Convention in Toronto (Graham Wolfe)
MLA Annual Convention (Toronto, Jan 7-10 2021); abstracts by March 1 2020: graham.wolfe at nus.edu.sg<mailto:graham.wolfe at nus.edu.sg>
I’m seeking papers for a special session on the topic of “theatre-fiction”, i.e. novels or stories about theatre.
Theatre has made star appearances in dozens of novels, from J. W. Goethe’s Wilhelm Meister’s Apprenticeship to Mikhail Bulgakov’s Black Snow, Virginia Woolf’s Between the Acts, and Margaret Atwood’s Hag-Seed. There are naturalist theatre-novels (George Moore’s A Mummer’s Wife), historical theatre-novels (John Arden’s Silence Among the Weapons or Priya Parmar’s Exit the Actress), children’s theatre-novels (Noel Streatfeild’s Ballet Shoes and Curtain Up), detective theatre-novels (Ngaio Marsh’s Opening Night and Nicola Upson’s An Expert in Murder), and even science-fiction theatre-novels (Christopher Stasheff’s A Company of Stars). But while literary genres such as science fiction, detective fiction, or Western fiction have been extensively theorized, “theatre-fiction” has not received the attention that this enduringly popular and provocatively intermedial genre deserves. This special session seeks to bring together scholars who are interested in theatre-fiction from different eras and parts of the world, asking what happens to theatre on the pages of novels, and what happens to novels when they spotlight theatre.
If you’re interested in writing about theatre-fiction but unable to attend the MLA Convention in Toronto, I’m still interested in hearing from you since I’m hoping to put together a collection of chapters on the topic.
By March 1 please send 300-word abstracts to Graham Wolfe, National University of Singapore: graham.wolfe at nus.edu.sg<mailto:graham.wolfe at nus.edu.sg>
