Hello friends,
It’s showtime! The curtains have opened on the Archives of Ontario’s new online exhibit, ON Stage: Spotlighting the History of Theatre in Ontario<http://www.archives.gov.on.ca/en/explore/online/historytheatres/index.aspx>.
Providing a behind-the-scenes look at the Archives of Ontario’s collections documenting the dramatic arts, this exhibit traces the development of Ontario’s live theatre scene in four acts, from theatre’s early stages of prominence in the 19th century to its vital role in the province’s cultural landscape today.
Recognizing COVID-19’s strain on the performing arts in Ontario, this exhibit brings a slice of the stage to theatre enthusiasts near and far and aims to raise awareness of the province’s rich history of live theatre, the ongoing importance of the dramatic arts, and the lasting relevance of this art form deeply rooted in human experience, with a unique capacity to teach, provoke, inspire, affect, and entertain.
Special thanks to the Toronto Reference Library for allowing us to spotlight two items from their collections in the exhibit, and to our fellow archives and memory institutions across Ontario who share and care for the many records and stories shaping the history of the dramatic arts in the province. We’re also grateful to the theatres and performing arts organizations who have been connecting, inspiring, and supporting theatre enthusiasts and local talent for decades. This exhibit would not have been possible without you, and the Archives of Ontario is honoured to play a small part in preserving and showcasing the legacy you continue to build.
For those seeking even more theatre-related content from the Archives of Ontario’s collections, check out our social media channels this month in English at @ArchivesOntario or in French at @ArchivesON (Twitter and Facebook) and @archives_ontario (Instagram).
We encourage you to please share this exhibit with your networks and email Danielle.Manning at ontario.ca<mailto:Danielle.Manning at ontario.ca> with any suggested edits or additions.
Enjoy!
