The Centre for Drama, Theatre & Performance Studies is located in downtown Toronto, the perfect location to experience and participate in all kinds of performance. We hold high standards for students in our broad and rich academic program, and throughout rigorous performance training.

Our centre is in the process of moving into a newly designed facility in the Laidlaw Wing of University College. In addition to the Helen Gardiner Phelan Playhouse, we will be moving into newly designed theatre and studio spaces that will enrich the creative and intellectual exploration of our students and faculty, all supported by our technical and production staff. With a combination of courses and practical streams, our centre emphasizes the integration of academic and practical work in our holistic approach to classical through contemporary theatre and performance.

Your opportunity:
Under the general direction of the Director and the day-to-day supervision of the Manager, Theatre Operations, the Technical Director supports technical needs of the Centre's academic courses and oversees all technical aspects of productions and events taking place at all of the Centre's performance spaces.

Your responsibilities will include:

  *   Reviewing and assessing requirements needed to meet both theatre and course production needs and timelines
  *   Scheduling day-to-day production activities and crews
  *   Providing detailed explanations and demonstrating technical procedures to theatre crews
  *   Analyzing technical operation activities and recommending changes for improvement
  *   Keeping well-informed on production activities, schedules, and rental agreements
  *   Analyzing and recommending facility equipment renewal, maintenance and storage for budgeting purposes
  *   Liaising with all stakeholders to ensure budget, deadlines, standards, and scope are met
  *   Paying close attention to occupational safety precautions

Essential Qualifications:

  *   Bachelor's Degree in a related field of study, or an acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience.
  *   Minimum five years of recent and related technical experience supporting professional theatre productions.
  *   Experience with technical aspects of productions (e.g. set, lighting, sound design, scenic art, front-of-house, box office, etc.)
  *   Experience providing technical direction to and scheduling work for theatre staff.
  *   Experience supporting rental spaces and agreements.
  *   Experience conducting needs assessments for facility equipment renewal, maintenance and storage to supportbudgeting processes.
  *   Excellent skills with identifying, troubleshooting, and making minor equipment repairs.
  *   Intermediate skills with Microsoft Office (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  *   Excellent oral and written communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
  *   Demonstrated time-management skills with the ability to effectively prioritize, multi-task and organize work, and meet tight deadlines while able to pay attention to detail.
  *   Demonstrated skills and ability to provide effective guidance and advice to stakeholders in a responsive, empathetic, diplomatic, and thoughtful manner.
