Models of Socially Engaged in Nigeria: The Challenges of Implementing Freire
The Centre for Socially Engaged Theatre invites you to join us in this FREE event presented by Dr. Abayomi Agboade Adegbamigbe.
In this talk, Dr. Adegbamigbe discusses how postcolonial African states have often inspired socially engaged theatre, such as Wole Soyinka’s Guerilla Theatre. However, their interaction with Freire’s pedagogy enkindles the question of praxis. He explores how praxis and socially engaged theatre center critical discourses and their potential to drive activism and transformation.
Bio: Dr. Adegbamigbe is a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Performing Arts, Adekunle Ajasin University, Nigeria. He practised as a freelance actor before launching into academics. He also managed a tiny theatre outfit (Forepage Productions) that created an unscripted “Value Drama” that was performed in major cities of Nigeria for the 2008 Stanbic-IBTC merger. He consulted for Dansol High School, where he introduced and facilitated Applied Theatre Workshops for Teachers. His research interests reside in community theatre plus other variants like Museum Theatre. Among his many community theatre outreaches is All for Peace, which he recently devised along with his students on Environmental Sustainability. Paulo Freire’s Pedagogy of the Oppressed largely guided his research works. Adegbamigbe is currently working on “Ijaye War Fossils as a Catalyst for Community/Museum Theatre” along with Prof. Oloruntoba-Oju. Adegbamigbe teaches at the Department of Performing Arts, Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, Nigeria.
