Good Record-Keeping for Good Research
Records, broadly understood, are the primary inputs and outputs of most digital humanities research. But along many axes of distance from their origins, records retain only such value as their keeping allows. Our research networks should therefore be deeply interested in record-keeping: not just in doing it, but in optimizing it, whether for efficiency, for comprehensiveness, for universality of access, or for some combination of ends best suited to the particular research context. Recent technologies in computing, imaging, audiovisual recording, and communication make all kinds of record-keeping much easier to implement. However, these technologies do not by themselves facilitate strategic thinking. This workshop is concerned with how we approach choices about keeping our research records, including choices about record-keeping technologies and the many options available for their deployment. After a brief overview, we will focus on specific concerns raised by participants about matters relevant to the Gatherings research network, such as the kinds of records it keeps, the kinds of value those records are thought to possess, and the ways in which future users are expected to engage with them.
