Psychological Impact of Prostate Cancer Treatments (Patient version)
Cancer Study Team
Psychology Department
Mount Allison University
You are invited to participate in a study of the psychological impacts of prostate cancer treatments. This study is for people who are currently undergoing treatment for prostate cancer, but are not suffering from metastatic symptoms. The study is run by Dexter Van Dam, a student at Mount Allison University, under the supervision of faculty member Dr. Lisa Dawn Hamilton.
This study involves filling out questionnaires about demographics, health, side effects from cancer treatments, sexual function, relationship quality and emotional changes. It will take approximately 15-25 minutes to complete. At the end of the survey, you will be given a code number and an email link that you can send to your spouse or partner (if you have one) for him or her to fill out a similar questionnaire. This part of the study is completely optional, and you can participate even if you don't have a partner or you have one but s/he doesn't wish to participate.
The goals of this study are to learn more about the psychological and emotional side effects that occur from different prostate cancer treatments. The information gathered in this study will be used to help prostate cancer patients, their partners, and their physicians to better understand the side effects of treatments, and therefore, to be better informed when making decisions about treatments.
Answering questions about your health, emotions, and relationships may lead to negative emotional reactions for some participants. If you feel you would be upset answering questions about these areas of your life, please do not participate in this study. If you begin to participate in the study, and feel upset at any time, we encourage you to contact your physician or a local prostate cancer support group. In Canada, visit the Prostate Cancer Canada Network website www.prostatecancernetwork.ca<http://www.prostatecancernetwork.ca/> or call 1-888-255-0333 to find a support group near you. In the U.S. (or internationally) visit the US Too website http://www.ustoo.org/Chapter_NearYou.asp or call 1-800-808-7866 to find a support group near you. Additionally, Malecare is a resource with a focus on gay and bisexual men with prostate cancer. Their website is www.malecare.org<http://www.malecare.org/>.
Your participation is completely voluntary. You may withdraw from this study at any time without penalty. If you wish to withdraw participation, just click the X in the top corner of your internet browser to close the survey.
All information obtained in this study will be kept strictly confidential and anonymous. We do not collect any identifying information about you. All surveys hosted with PsychData are encrypted using 256-bit SSL Technology (Secure Socket Layer) that is equivalent to the industry standard for securely transmitting credit card information over the Internet. This technology encrypts BOTH the questions displayed to the participants and their responses. Thus, all responses are instantly encrypted and remain so until they are received at the PsychData database. The results of this study will be presented as a group and no individual participants will be identified.
Please note that the online survey is hosted by PsychData, which is a web survey company located in the USA. All responses to the survey will be stored and accessed in the USA. This company is subject to U.S. laws, in particular, to the U.S. Patriot Act that allows authorities access to the records of internet service providers. If you choose to participate in the survey you understand that your responses to the questions will be stored and accessed in the USA.
