Men don't ask for help?

It is a common stereotype that men simply don't like asking for help. But we know that the reality is far more complex. As family members, friends, and health professionals seek to support men living with cancer there is value in stepping away from our well-trodden assumptions. By listening to what men have to say we are in a better position to provide relevant supports that meet men where they are, building on capacities and assisting with challenges.

This presentation focuses on the results of a study examining how 30 men with a variety of cancer types perceived their illness and responded to the physical, mental, emotional, and relational challenges of a life disrupted by cancer. Findings detail how men drew on their own resources and how they obtained support from health providers, family and friends, and peers with cancer. These patterns are considered in relation to powerful gendered messages in our society that encourage men to be strong, independent, and controlled. Insights and implications for men with cancer and their support persons will be addressed and there will be opportunity to discuss the findings.
