CCSN April 2014 Eletter

The Canadian Cancer Survivor Network (CCSN) works to connect patients, survivors and other stakeholder groups with decision makers and the wider community to engage in discussion and to act on evidence-based best practices to alleviate the medical, emotional, financial and social costs of cancer and encourage research on ways to overcome barriers to optimal cancer care and follow-up for survivors in Canada.

 img6 <http://i1.createsend1.com/ei/r/2F/8D7/761/csimport/RyanClarkefinal.133208.jpg>

This free introduction to advocacy will interest patients, survivors, family, friends, caregivers, and any member of the community interested in the best possible care and follow-up for cancer patients and survivors.

Most cancer patients and survivors feel there are some aspects of their cancer care and post cancer experiences that could be improved but do not know how to go about it.

Bring your questions and join us for what will be an interesting and motivating webinar!

In this webinar:

*	You will be provided with an overview of advocacy and why it is important to use advocacy to make change.
*	You will be introduced to the step-by-step process to create an actual advocacy plan that you can then use in support of your issues.
*	You will understand better how to use advocacy tools specifically in the context of interacting with governments.
*	The impact of volunteering and taking positive action to effect change are important elements in the transition to post-treatment life.

Take this opportunity to obtain insight and information from Ryan Clarke, the President of Advocacy Solutions, who is committed to providing a voice to organizations and individuals through the development and implementation of impactful advocacy strategies. Ryan has spoken about advocacy across Canada and internationally, teaching and training thousands of people how to make their voices heard.

CCSN president & CEO Jackie Manthorne addresses the Economic Club of Canada

 img6 <http://i2.createsend1.com/ei/r/2F/8D7/761/csimport/Jackieatpodium.153207.jpg>

Jackie Manthorne spoke on the topic What cancer patients want at the Economic Club of Canada in Toronto on April 14, 2014.

Manthorne explained that in 2013, the Canadian Cancer Survivor Network conducted a members’ survey in which patients were asked what they wanted, and then went on to speak about the responses and the conclusions we can draw from these responses.

"Overall," Manthorne said, "patients told us that they were concerned about the physical side effects of treatment and surgery and psychological or mental health issues; changing family dynamics; financial issues and difficulties transitioning back to work; and the fear of cancer spreading or coming back."

SOMETIMES, IT’S MORE THAN JUST A COFFEE

 img6 <http://i3.createsend1.com/ei/r/2F/8D7/761/csimport/Coffeeparty.111002.jpg>

The courage and determination of cancer survivors is an inspiration to us all. June 1st is National Cancer Survivors Day, and that day and the week after, the Canadian Cancer Survivor Network (CCSN) will honour survivors who are living with and beyond cancer.

It’s simple. Just put on a pot – or three! – of coffee or tea, invite colleagues and friends to join you, ask guests to put in a toonie (or more), and you’re done!

Get started now. Email participate at survivornet.ca and say “count us in” to obtain the registration form for your coffee party, promotional materials for your bulletin board and newsletter and more ideas for a fun coffee break.

Take time to honour a cancer survivor. Participating companies should email their logo to participate at survivornet.ca for recognition on CCSN’s website, www.survivornet.ca.

CCSN works to connect patients, survivors and other stakeholder groups with decision makers and the wider community to engage in discussion and to act on evidence-based best practices to alleviate the medical, emotional, financial and social costs of cancer and encourage research on ways to overcome barriers to optimal cancer care and follow-up for survivors in Canada.

Opportunity to be part of a video about metastatic prostate cancer

 img6 <http://i4.createsend1.com/ei/r/2F/8D7/761/csimport/Groupofmentalking.100953.jpg>

The Canadian Cancer Survivor Network has been working with Janssen Inc. on the development of a website for men living with metastatic prostate cancer. There is a section of the website that will focus around “What Matters to You” which will house information about advanced prostate cancer and provide visitors with unique educational tools to help them make more informed decisions.

To help support this website, Janssen is looking for men living with advanced prostate cancer who are willing to share their personal experiences in a short video that will be used as content for the website to educate others going through similar situations, and also as part of a larger video to encourage men and their loved ones to visit the website.

Details:

WHAT: Film a short interview about the participant’s life with advanced prostate cancer.

WHERE: The video crew would visit you at home.

WHEN: They are hoping to film participants during the weeks of May 5 and 12, but will certainly work around your prior commitments.

WHO: You and possibly a loved one.

TIME COMMITMENT: They should only need one to two hours of your time.

Please get in touch with Jackie Manthorne at jmanthorne at surivivornet.ca if you are interested in being part this video, and please pass this info to anyone you think might like to take advantage of the opportunity.

Join CCSN's work on asbestos!

 img6 <http://i5.createsend1.com/ei/r/2F/8D7/761/csimport/Asbestosandmesotheliomaphoto.101400.jpg>

It is estimated that currently about 125 million people in the world are exposed to asbestos at the workplace. According to World Health Organization <http://ccsn.createsend1.com/t/r-l-xykjtkl-tiliitlrdd-k/> , (WHO) estimates, more than 107,000 people die each year from asbestos-related lung cancer, mesothelioma and asbestosis resulting from occupational exposures. One in every three deaths from occupational cancer is estimated to be caused by asbestos. In addition, it is estimated that several thousands of deaths can be attributed annually to exposure to asbestos in the living environment.

You can help raise awareness about the dangers of asbestos by joining CCSN's Asbestos and Mesothelioma Advisory Council. To become a member, contact Jackie Manthorne at jmanthorne at survivornet.ca.
