A Race Against Time: 

New prostate cancer research gives 24,000 Canadian men a fighting chance

In response to the urgent need to increase the pace of discovery, Prostate Cancer Canada just awarded a Translation Acceleration Grant (TAG) to a team led by Dr. Paul Rennie of the Vancouver Prostate Centre and the University of British Columbia. His project, titled “Pre-clinical development of the next-generation anti-androgens for the treatment of drug-resistant and advanced prostate cancer” has received $1.5 million in Prostate Cancer Canada research funds, made possible thanks to our generous donors and supporters. His research project will help develop new therapies to treat and eliminate drug and castrate-resistant prostate cancer.

While there have been significant strides made in prostate cancer research over the last 20 years, including a 40% reduction in mortality, somewhere between 10% to 15%  of men are still affected by aggressive cancer and prostate cancer still accounts for the third-most cancer deaths for men. Dr. Rennie’s research hopes to develop new therapies for men facing prostate cancer, and with the potential to enter human clinical trials within the next few years, gives hope to those faced with advanced disease.
