Jyotish Dhebar: strength in openness

Jyotish Dhebar isn’t afraid to talk about his own health. Faced with his own impending death from advanced stage prostate cancer, Jyotish has taken every opportunity to fearlessly open up about his journey, the effect it has had on those close to him, and the importance of support networks.

Jyotish’s prostate cancer journey began on a vacation to the United States when he started having to use the washroom far more frequently than normal. Upon his return, he had a PSA test that revealed extremely high PSA levels. With his kidneys faltering, a “pretty big tumor” was discovered and he was diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic prostate cancer.

On March 19, Prostate Cancer Canada and the Building Trades of Alberta announced new funding that will support groundbreaking research into the prognosis and treatment of prostate cancer. The funding is described as an “apprenticeship” – a unique opportunity for a talented young researcher to work on leading-edge research with the best equipment and alongside the brightest minds.

Successful apprentice, Samar Hegazy, will work with Dr. Tarek Bismar's lab at the Prostate Cancer Centre and the University of Calgary as a postdoctoral clinical research fellow. Dr. Bismar’s team is working to identify biomarkers to differentiate slow-growing versus aggressive prostate cancers. The team is building a tissue bank of 250 prostate cancers to test those biomarkers and believe that the results of this work will better predict the potential spread of prostate cancers and in turn, better predict patient outcomes.
