CCSN November 2015 Eletter

Increased melanoma diagnoses basis for new melanoma portal

Ottawa - November 3, 2015: The Canadian Cancer Survivor Network is pleased to announce the launch of its newest website portal on melanoma <http://survivornet.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=318d4e052fdd9593317146113&id=137bd79e58&e=79f909daf9> .

Approximately 6,500 Canadians are diagnosed with melanoma annually, and this number increases every year. For those dealing with this type of cancer, the journey from diagnosis to treatment and management of the disease is rarely a road travelled alone. Spouses, partners, children, extended family, friends and even colleagues may share in the burden of this life-changing disease.

The Canadian Cancer Survivor Network (CCSN) recognized the heavy burden a diagnosis melanoma places not only on those who are diagnosed with it, but on their families and extended support networks. In response, CCSN has created an online portal recognizing and addressing the experience of melanoma, whether in its early or more advanced stages.

"It is critically important to address the information needs and concerns of melanoma patients and their families,” said Jackie Manthorne, President and CEO of the Canadian Cancer Survivor Network. "Each patient will have his or her own experience of melanoma. Aside from purely medical considerations, the journey includes many practical decisions and adjustments. Each of these changes has the potential to impact those closest to them. Providing families and other caregivers a place to find reliable information they can relate to, and a place to connect, can help alleviate some of the anxiety associated with a melanoma diagnosis.”

About the Portal

The Melanoma Portal provides a trusted and accurate source of melanoma information – and connection. Like the spokes of a wheel, sections on the portal centralize information on the diagnosis and treatment of melanoma, provide information and resources on financial planning and address the issues that caregivers face.
The portal includes the following sections:

*	About Melanoma
*	Prevention
*	Risk factors, Signs and Symptoms
*	Diagnosis
*	Treatment of Melanoma
*	Living Well with Melanoma
*	The Side-Effects of Treatment and Melanoma
*	Mental Wellness
*	Caregiving
*	Financial Information and Resources

The webinar is broken out into two parts:

Part 1: Biologics - The first part of the presentation will focus on biologics, including an explanation of the high level of precision that is required to produce a consistent biological product each time.

Part 2: Biosimilars – The second part of the presentation will focus on the growing interest in biosimilars, followed by what we can learn from Europe’s experience. We will also provide Health Canada’s position on biosimilars, discuss key issues surrounding biosimilars relevant to the Canadian market, as well as, the importance of patient safety and patient choice.

Following the presentation, there will be an interactive discussion where listeners will have an opportunity to ask questions and continue the dialogue on biologic medicines and biosimilars.

Louise Binder is a lawyer who has been involved in informing the development of health policy and systemic treatment access practices from a patient perspective for more than 20 years.

She started her work in this area in the HIV community in the early 1990s after her own diagnosis and before effective treatments were available for HIV. She cofounded the Canadian Treatment Action Council (CTAC) in 1996 that successfully ensured access to treatments and quality care for people living with HIV by working with the federal and provincial governments and other relevant stakeholders to enhance drug review and approval systems, pricing policies and access to liver transplants for this community. She wrote a paper on Universal Drug Coverage a decade ago while Chair of CTAC. She had a special interest in women's issues, chairing the Ontario women's organization Voice of Positive Women for over a decade. She has been involved in these issues internationally as well.

Two years ago Louise began similar work in the cancer area and we are happy to announce that Louise is now the Health Policy Consultant for the Canadian Cancer Survivor Network.

She has been recognized by many organizations for her work including receiving an Honorary Doctorate of Laws from her alma mater Queen's Law School, the Order of Ontario from the province of Ontario and two Queen Elizabeth II medals.

*	Become members of our Patient Engagement Advisory Committee to provide advice and guidance for our A Seat at the Table project.
*	Be nominated to sit on cancer and other healthcare Boards, committees and research peer review panels where decisions are being made about cancer care, including who will receive funding to conduct cancer research.
*	Help us develop curriculum so that patients can be better informed about healthcare and cancer care issues.

Please contact CCSN President & CEO Jackie Manthorne (jmanthorne at survivornet.ca) for the Committee’s terms of reference or to indicate your interest in being nominated to sit on Boards and committees. If you would like to help develop curriculum, please contact CCSN Board Secretary Mona Forrest (mforrest at survivornet.ca).
