WEDNESDAY JULY 19th - 7:00 PM at the WELLSPRING CENTRE, 2545 SIXTH LINE in OAKVILLE

For those who may not have heard, the session on ‘What can Wellspring do for the Prostate Cancer Patient’ has been moved to August, so we have time for another wide-ranging discussion evening next week.

We had two new men join our group last month so that took us to a record 16 new members in the first half of 2017. Thank-you to those who are spreading the word, to Wellspring Birmingham-Gilgan House who also refer men to us and to our supporters amongst the urology community and the local hospitals.

Equally significant, we are seeing men before they have had treatment – they are looking for ideas, for experiences and for better sources of information.

We are not doctors and don’t profess to have medical expertise – that’s what the professionals are there for – but often we can help with what questions to ask and that can be a great help in itself.

Our average attendance in the first half was 21 compared to 18 last year, so obviously not everyone comes out to every meeting. That’s OK – we want people to get what they need and want from our meetings – for some that takes one visit, for others our group becomes an enduring interest.

What’s New This Month??

Ontario Health Technology Advisory Committee Recommendation

§ The Ontario Health Technology Advisory Committee recommends against publicly funding the robotic surgical system for radical prostatectomy

The committee’s recommendations were based on several factors.

There is no high-quality evidence that the robotic surgical system results in a higher cure rate when compared with open prostatectomy.

There is also no high-quality evidence that the use of the robotic surgical system results in lower rates of urinary incontinence or erectile dysfunction. Although some studies did suggest improved outcomes with the use of the robotic surgical system, these studies had serious limitations.

Based on the economic evaluation in the health technology assessment, the Ontario Health Technology Advisory Committee felt that the robotic surgical system does not provide good value for money.
