This is a big initiative that encourages our volunteers, members, friends and community to donate during June 1st – 30th.
We have set a goal of $8200, to fully support and cover the costs of our <http://hopespring.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=245009009133a608181d89b73&id=8f62fa54e6&e=ece80c31c3> Healthy Cooking Class. Healthy Cooking teaches members how to cook and eat healthier, facilitated by a registered dietitian experienced in the challenges that face those living with cancer. Health Cooking is a six week interactive program led by a registered dietitian with specialized knowledge in addressing dietary and eating issues associated with cancer. Through participatory food preparation, nutritional and educational information is shared by our registered dietitian regarding how to handle cancer related eating challenges and what to eat during treatment. Recipes are Canadian Cancer Society approved and members share the food prepared by the class. The class can also act as a stress reducer as members gain knowledge on how to manage their cancer related food challenges. It is open to all members. Many choose to attend with a family member or caregiver as well. As with all HopeSpring programming, Healthy Cooking is free to those facing cancer. Recognizing the energy limitations that are often part of a cancer diagnosis, Healthy Cooking is offered in Waterloo at the Erb Street Mennonite Church and in Cambridge at Langs. This allows members to attend closer to their homes within the Waterloo Region.
"I taught close to 50 students in my Healthy Cooking Classes during my time with HopeSpring. What I've experienced has been impactful. Through this hands-on class, I've seen my students relationship with food blossom. I've watched both avid and new cooks learn how to add new flavor to their foods to combat the taste changes that come with treatment. My students have discovered the healing power of foods. This class has given them the skills, knowledge and ability to create a healthy meal pattern that will help them through their treatment, along with manage their symptoms. My students have bonded over the creation of and learning about good food. This class is a unique and powerful tool that has helped many, and I hope will continue to make a lasting impact on its attendees." Nicole Osinga, RD, MAN, BASc
Since its inception, over 100 HopeSpring members have taken advantage of the Healthy Cooking program. The small class size (max 20 members) creates a relaxed and supportive environment where members can share their challenges and successes with other individuals, families, and the program’s registered dietitian. The program covers topics ranging from safe food handling to reducing the strain of preparing meals in the wake of a cancer diagnosis and during treatment. As it is open to families and caregivers, it may also help caregivers understand the various side effects which derive from cancer treatment. By addressing challenges with honesty, compassion and a little good humor, the program also aims to help families communicate more effectively and stay connected.
