Hi all:

Those of you who attended the meeting may recall my mention of a note I had
sent a candidate for the provincial election.

Below is the body of the note that you may customize & send to candidates in
your area.

Let's push for change in men's health.

Thx.

Glen

Hello candidate:

I understand that you have been selected to represent the
PC/Liberal/NDP/Green party in the provincial election.

In case you are looking for an item to add to your platform, below are 2
relating to healthcare for men.

1) OHIP to cover PSA testing for all men over 40 as a screening method
for Prostate Cancer (PCa). Currently Ontario is the only province that does
not cover screening via the PSA test. If a man, after consultation with his
doctor, wishes to have a PSA test, he must pay for it. There are 2
exceptions: once a man is diagnosed with PCa, PSA tests become covered by
OHIP and if a man is a direct descendent of a man with PCa, a doctor can
certify that & OHIP will then cover the cost. PSA testing should have the
same coverage by OHIP as does mammography and Pap testing for women.

2) When a man diagnosed with PCa decides to have it treated, one of the
options is removal i.e. a radical prostatectomy. The current manual
procedure usually results in a 3 or 4 day hospitalization. The modern method
is a Robotic Assisted Laparoscopic Prostatectomy (RALP) which often results
in only a 1 day hospitalization. Occupying a hospital bed costs around $5230
/day. OHIP does not fully fund the cost of the robotic procedure resulting
in hospitals relying on their charitable foundations to pick up the nearly
$3200 cost not covered by OHIP. This is in spite of a $10-15 thousand cost
saving from less time in hospital.

Please make removal of these barriers to men's health a part of your
election platform.

If you want some further info / speaking points on this topic, contact me as
I am a member of the Prostate Cancer Canada Network Waterloo- Wellington
(PCCN W-W) which is a Prostate Cancer Support Group serving all of
Waterloo-Wellington. Several of the PCCN W-W members have had RALP in either
Toronto or Hamilton.

Take care,
