Subject: LETTER TO THE EDITOR

 

Please consider the following for publishing as a Letter to the Editor.

 

Missing Deadly Statistics

As part of the front page article "Opioids claim more lives than road
crashes"  (G & M 28 Mar 18)there is a listing of "Deadly Statistics" showing
2018 deaths from Opioid overdoses projected to  be 4000, with actuals from
2015  for  Parkinson's 2543, Motor Vehicle Accidents 2066, Homicide 611, &
HIV 190. While they are significant, even the 2018 numbers for opioids are
less than the 4100 Canadian deaths from Prostate Cancer for 2015. In spite
of the numbers of men who die from Prostate Cancer (PCa) the Ontario
government does not cover PSA testing to screen for PCa until after a man is
diagnosed with PCa or is a first line relative (son, brother etc)of a man
previously diagnosed with PCa. Furthermore, OHIP does not fully cover the
cost of modern day Robotic Assisted Prostate Surgery leaving the hospital
where the surgery is performed with a $3200 unfunded cost per procedure.  

These inequalities exist even while the Ontario government allocates more
than $200 million to the opioid crisis.
